Drone roof survey in Broad Tenterden: what you get
The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We don’t fly in strong wind or a downpour, because control and safety come first. If the weather turns, we will agree another day. We check the forecast ahead of the visit and again on site. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, large and complex roofs and fragile roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are cracked mortar along the ridge and standing water on a flat roof.
Somewhere as small as Broad Tenterden, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, sent by email. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Questions from Broad Tenterden
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Broad Tenterden?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Broad Tenterden?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Do you look in the loft space?
If it’s needed and safe to reach, yes. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement.
Do I need to be at home?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We will talk about access when booking.
Do you work in Broad Tenterden?
Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, Broad Tenterden included.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
How experienced are you?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years.
What a drone roof survey looks like in Broad Tenterden
Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. Older houses across Kent often have handmade clay or peg tiles, and many have tile-hung walls. You will also find oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses among the county’s older buildings. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.
Historic houses such as Smallhythe Place, about 1.6 miles south, show how far back building around Broad Tenterden goes. For older roofs nearby, a look from the air or with a thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition. Anyone responsible for a site like Tenterden Church of England Junior School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Around Broad Tenterden

How the survey works
We check the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit usually takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a hamlet or village like Broad Tenterden, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
- Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
- Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
- The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
- We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Advice
Tips from our surveys
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- Shut pets inside while we fly
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Move stored items away from the hatch
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
The Premium Survey report comes the same day. Drone photos are included where we could fly.
Look at the roof from the ground after strong winds. Debris in the garden is a sign to act on. A drone can show exactly what has moved.
What this survey can’t tell you
Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- A flight where airspace permission is refused
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.
Roof types and parts we check
- Fragile roofs
- Large and complex roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Tall and steep roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
Common roof problems in Broad Tenterden
Chimney tops take the worst of the weather. Cracked flaunching, loose pots and eroded pointing are frequently invisible from below. Close-up drone photos show their condition.
Here are some of the things we see frequently:
- Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
- Hidden gutters full of leaves
- Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
- Lifted or split lead flashings
If you live in an older home near Parish Church of St Mildred, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
