How a drone roof survey works in Charing Hill

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photos of those roofs from the air. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a photo-illustrated written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we can’t fly, we tell you why. If you’ve noticed moss and weeds taking hold up top and debris building up in hidden gutters, we can find out what’s behind it, on tall and steep roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and large and complex roofs alike.

Older buildings in small places like Charing Hill may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

For landlords and managing agents

Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget, with the most urgent items set out first.

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, from shops and offices to industrial units. Larger roofs take longer, and they’re priced for the size.

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

Chimney tops are hard to see from the ground. A drone gets close to the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, so cracks and gaps are clear.

Ridges and hips

Wind lifts loose ridge and hip tiles. Finding them early keeps them from coming down.

Drone roof surveys in Charing Hill: local notes

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.

Take an older house close to Church of St Peter and St Paul: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps. Godinton House, about 4.2 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Charing Hill. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. If you look after a building like Charing Church of England Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

FAQs for Charing Hill

How do I find out if my home in Charing Hill is listed?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Is Charing Hill within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Does the drone show the underside of the roof?

No. It sees only the outer surfaces. Leaks, damp timbers and condensation often show first from inside, so we inspect the roof space as well where access is safe.

Do I need to be at home?

Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access as you book.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We carry out surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Will I get photos?

Yes. Photographs are part of every report.

How long does a drone roof survey take?

The visit typically takes about 1–2 hours at a typical home, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. We will confirm what to expect when we arrange the visit.

Checking the roof from ground level

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.

A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

How the survey works

Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photos, emailed to you. On timing, most surveys take about 1–2 hours for most houses, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Somewhere as small as Charing Hill, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors

Advice

When you need someone else

This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying
  • A structural engineer’s report
  • Flights in strong wind or a downpour

If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. The full list of what we check.

Useful tips for Charing Hill property owners

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Book early if you’re near an airport
  • Keep pets indoors during the flight
  • Let us know about any leaks or concerns
  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too

File the report and photos with your home documents. They give you something to compare against later, and they help if you sell.

Every so frequently, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside frequently shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.
