About our drone roof survey in Colwood
Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs can’t always be inspected up close. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that can’t be seen from the street. The photos go into a written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. Where a flight isn’t possible, we explain why. If you’ve noticed vegetation in valleys and gutters and blistered or cracked flat roof coverings, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Somewhere as small as Colwood, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from the ground. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned beforehand. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It is useful straight away, and a good reference for later.

Roof by roof
Large commercial roofs
Older cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.
Steep slate and tile slopes
Walking on fragile coverings can break them. The drone sees them without touching them.
Useful tips for Colwood property owners
Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:
- Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
- Keep pets indoors during the flight
- Expect a little longer if permission is needed
- Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
With the Premium Survey, the report arrives the same day. Drone photographs are included where we could fly.
Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear, particularly in autumn. On high roofs, leave clearing to a professional. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.
Do you need a drone roof survey in Colwood?
Many roofs are never seen properly from ground level. You can’t see the back slope, the valleys or the chimney tops. Problems in those places often go unseen until they leak, which is why owners turn to a drone.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- Ridge pieces that have lifted
- Outlets choked with leaves and silt
- Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
- Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
Whatever the street in Colwood, a roof costs least to look after when faults are caught early.

Why get it checked now?
Small defects on a high roof grow with each storm. Finding them now means less to put right. For older village homes like those around Colwood, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

How we price drone roof surveys
A few things affect what a survey costs:
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
- The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
- The shape of the roof and its details
A Basic Survey starts from £150, with VAT included. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400. We confirm the price for your roof before booking.
Booking your survey
If you can, have these to hand when you contact us:
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
- Access details, like a loft hatch or a shared roof
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
Unsure which package suits your roof? It is easiest to ring 07833 053749 or email us and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We will explain the options and the price.
What happens on the day
We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the loft space if there is safe access. All told, expect roughly 1–2 hours for a house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Cottages and farmhouses around Colwood often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
- We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
- You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Advice
Drones, thermal imaging and Colwood roofs
With Tyes Place about 3.4 miles north-east, Colwood sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.

Common questions in Colwood
How do I find out if my home in Colwood is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Colwood?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not unless it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
What does a roof survey cost?
Our price is from £400, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT.
Is Colwood in your area?
Yes. We cover Colwood and the rest of West Sussex. To book, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.
Will you check the loft?
If the survey needs it and the roof space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.
Can you survey in bad weather?
It depends on the weather and the survey. High wind or heavy rain can make access unsafe and ground a drone, so we’d move the date with you.
