Airspace, weather and East Hill roofs

Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. Across Kent, older roofs are often handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. You will also find oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses among the county’s older buildings. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail.

Lullingstone Castle, about 2.2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around East Hill. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from the air or with a thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof itself.

East Hill is about 5 miles north-east of Sevenoaks, in Kent. In East Hill, as across Kent, every roof gets the same careful survey. We cover towns and villages across Kent. Our Maidstone page covers surveys nearby.

Surveys in TN15 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If you need a drone roof survey at a property on Cherry Tree Grove, Ashen Grove Road and East Hill Road or anywhere close by, we can survey it. Neighbouring places we cover for drone roof surveys include Knatts Valley (1 mile south-east), Romney Street (1 mile south-west), West Kingsdown (1 mile north-east), Maplescombe (1 mile north) and Woodlands (1 mile south). We also work in nearby towns such as Maidstone (14 miles east), Dartford (7 miles north), Sevenoaks (5 miles south-west), Royal Tunbridge Wells (14 miles south), Gravesend (9 miles north-east) and Tonbridge (10 miles south).

Drone roof survey in East Hill

A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. The camera stays on your roof, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it is worth letting them know about the visit. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Each flight is kept short and stays focused on the roof we’re there to survey. If you’ve noticed slipped or missing slates on a high roof and slates or tiles shifted by high winds, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on large and complex roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and fragile roofs alike.

Some older homes in villages like East Hill are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

After the visit, you get a photo-illustrated written report, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

The survey, step by step

You do not need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll take it from there. A typical survey takes about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. In a small place like East Hill, access is usually the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Before the survey

  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Keep pets in another room

Why act early in East Hill

Leaving a slipped slate or a blocked valley can turn a small fault into a leak. Spotting them early keeps the work smaller. Older cottages and farmhouses around East Hill can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.

Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in East Hill

Is my home in East Hill listed or in a conservation area?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Will you come out to East Hill?

Yes, East Hill is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Can the drone do thermal imaging?

The drone survey is a photographic inspection. Thermal imaging is a separate check, included in our Premium Survey.

How do I book a survey in East Hill?

The quickest way is to ring 07833 053749 or email us. Let us know the address and a little about the roof. Surveys run on any day of the week.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.

What about my neighbours’ privacy?

We take care around neighbouring homes. We photograph your roof, not your neighbours’ property. Letting neighbours know ahead of time helps.

Do you hold CAA registration for the drone?

Yes, we are. The CAA has issued us a Flyer ID and an Operator ID, and we fly a drone that weighs under 250g.

What we look for on each type of roof

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Outlets, edges and roof plant are common problem areas. We photograph them closely, as far as the flight allows.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Hidden gutters and valleys sit out of sight. From above, we can see the linings, the joints and any debris.

Do you need a drone roof survey in East Hill?

Parapet gutters, box gutters and central valleys sit out of sight. Debris collects where nobody looks, until water overflows inside. From above, they’re easy to see.

Signs worth acting on include:

  • Outlets choked with leaves and silt
  • Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
  • Worn lead at chimneys and walls
  • Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water

Take an older house close to Church of Saint Mary the Virgin: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • What experience they bring
  • What follow-up you get after the report

What to expect from a roof survey

What you can safely check yourself

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

It helps to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

Landlords, agents and block managers in East Hill

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan.

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work around your tenants.
