About our drone roof survey in Eel Pie Island
The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We don’t fly in strong wind or a downpour, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, chimney stacks and fragile roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are eroded pointing on a chimney stack and ridge and hip pieces working loose.
Many London roofs are hidden from the pavement: butterfly roofs behind parapets, dormer tops and flat roofs over back additions. That is where a view from the air or a thermal camera helps, by showing what cannot be reached safely. The weather decides the day: both drones and thermal cameras need the right conditions. Thermal images show surface temperature, not water itself, so findings are checked with moisture readings.
You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

What happens on the day
Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. It normally takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. London terraces rarely offer a view of the whole roof from one spot, so in Eel Pie Island we work round the house, using the street, the windows, the loft and any safe vantage point behind it. If other people live in the building, let us know who can let us into the shared parts.
- We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
- We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
- We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
- We also look inside the loft space where it is safe.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
Before the survey
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- Point out any leaks or damp patches

Different roofs, different checks
Ridges and hips
Ridges and hips are the most exposed parts of a pitched roof. From above, we can see loose ridges and missing mortar.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Felt frequently lasts around 15 to 20 years, EPDM rubber around 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30. Photos show how the covering is wearing.
Airspace, weather and Eel Pie Island roofs
Eel Pie Island is about 2 miles from the edge of the flight restriction zone around Heathrow Airport. We check the exact boundary for the address before flying, and if the roof falls inside it, we ask for permission first. Further from the centre, London’s housing takes in interwar semis with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles as well as slate-roofed terraces. On a semi of that age, the small roofs over the bays, the hip tiles and any later dormer each need their own look. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.
As a London address, Eel Pie Island can be tricky for parking: a visitor permit or a nearby bay makes the day easier, as a space near the door cannot be promised. With Richmond House about 0.2 miles west, the area around Eel Pie Island has a long history. For older roofs nearby, a look from the air or with a thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition.

Useful tips for Eel Pie Island property owners
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
- Move stored items away from the hatch
- Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
- Book early if you are near an airport
Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos from the flight. Each finding is explained in plain words, and recommendations are ranked by urgency where that helps.
Don’t block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.

What you can safely check yourself
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
When to book a survey in Eel Pie Island
After storms, owners want to know what has moved. It is hard to tell from below what has shifted. A drone shows what has slipped, lifted or gone.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Worn lead at chimneys and walls
- Wind damage high on the roof
- Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
- Plant growth and moss on the roof
If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Treaty Centre, big, flat commercial roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images help most.
