Useful tips for Gay Street property owners

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet
  • Check there’s room outside for the drone to take off
  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps
  • Make sure the loft can be reached

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to talk through the photos and findings. It is a chance to ask about anything in the report.

Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, especially in autumn. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Blocked hidden gutters cause many leaks.

About our drone roof survey in Gay Street

A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. We keep the camera on the roof we’re surveying, not on gardens or windows next door. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it’s worth letting them know about the visit. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. We survey tall and steep roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and flat roofs on upper floors, and people most often book us about moss building up on slopes and in gutters and wind damage high on the roof.

Villages like Gay Street often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

What we do, step by step

We will ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes about one to two hours at a typical home; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Older roofs in small places like Gay Street can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
  4. We also look inside the loft space where it’s safe.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • Note where any stains or damp appear

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Gay Street

Is drone flying allowed in Gay Street?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Do you cover smaller places like Gay Street?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Let us know which days suit you when you book.

How many surveys have you done?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

Will I get photos?

Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible, which makes the report easy to follow.

What’s the best way to book?

It is easiest to phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Let us know the address and a little about the roof, and we will point you to the right survey. We survey on any day of the week.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, if whoever owns or manages the building agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Gay Street

Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Older slates and tiles break easily, and fragile sheet roofs are dangerous to walk on. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.

Here are some of the things we see frequently:

  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
  • Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
  • Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
  • Moss and weeds taking hold up top

Whatever the street in Gay Street, a roof costs least to look after when faults are caught early.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • What happens after the report arrives
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA

What a roof survey includes

What we look for on each type of roof

Chimney stacks

The top of a stack is usually out of view. Close-up photos show the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, so cracks and gaps are clear.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Flat roofs on tall buildings are often seen by nobody. From above, standing water, splits and tired upstands are clear.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

Drones, thermal imaging and Gay Street roofs

Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail. About 2.4 miles south-west lies Old Place Manor, a reminder of how long the area around Gay Street has been built on. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

Honest limits

Before booking, it is worth knowing what a survey will not do:

  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Flights in strong wind or a downpour
  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
