Common roof problems in Graveney

Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and some sheet roofs are fragile. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.

Signs worth acting on include:

  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
  • Lifted or split lead flashings
  • Wind damage high on the roof
  • Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings

For site and facilities teams at buildings like Graveney Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

What to expect from a roof survey

About our drone roof survey in Graveney

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly, including slopes that can’t be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we cannot fly, we tell you why. If you are worried about loose ridge and hip tiles and cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on flat roofs on upper floors, chimney stacks and fragile roofs alike.

In a village or hamlet like Graveney, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from ground level. Weather and airspace are looked at before the visit. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, with a note and a photo for each point. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

The survey, step by step

We don’t take risks to get a closer look. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and if part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. The survey usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. In a small place like Graveney, access is typically the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. We also look inside the loft space where it is safe.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

How the survey changes by roof type

Ridges and hips

Wind lifts loose ridge and hip tiles. Finding them early keeps them from coming down.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Blocked outlets in hidden gutters cause many leaks. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.

Drones, thermal imaging and Graveney roofs

Graveney is within about 2 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons.

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of All Saints, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

What a drone roof survey does not cover

This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • A flight where airspace permission is refused
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
