Practical tips

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:

  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet
  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
  • Let us know what you want to see

File the report and photos with your home documents. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys.

Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Take photos of any changes.

About our drone roof survey in Hersden

A drone shows the outside of a roof very well, but it cannot see inside. We check the loft from inside where it is safe, because the underside tells its own story. Inside and out together tell you far more. Your report shows the drone photos alongside what we saw in the loft. Where the loft cannot be reached safely, we note it. We survey tall and steep roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and large and complex roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are chimney tops in poor condition and plant growth and moss on the roof.

Places like Hersden can be near small airfields or other airspace restrictions, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Exposed sites can be windy, and a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind. Each flight is planned with neighbours’ privacy in mind, as well as the airspace and the wind.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

What this survey cannot tell you

We only report what can be seen safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you. What our survey covers.

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

DIY checks: what’s safe

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

What we do, step by step

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and make notes for the report. Most visits take about 1–2 hours for most houses, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. A visit to a smaller place like Hersden is no different on the day: we look from ground level, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it’s safe. It helps to show us anything you’ve already noticed.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
  4. Where there is safe access, we check the loft as well.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Before the survey

  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Booking a survey

Photos help, if you have them. Take them safely from the ground or a window, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

Drone roof surveys in Hersden: local notes

Hersden is within about 5 miles of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons.

Take a building like Hersden Village Primary School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Hersden

Strong winds can lift slates, tiles and ridge pieces. It’s hard to tell from below what has shifted. Close-up photos make it clear what has been disturbed.

Signs worth acting on include:

  • Damage after a storm that cannot be seen from below
  • Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
  • Hidden gutters full of leaves
  • Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of All Saints, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • Will the report include photos?
  • Whether the loft is part of the inspection
  • Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
  • Their insurance cover

What to expect from a roof survey

Questions from Hersden

Is Hersden within the area you cover?

Yes, Hersden is covered. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Hersden?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. We check the roof, not the whole building, so it’s not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.

Will you check the loft?

Yes, where the survey calls for it and there’s safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.

What does the report include?

You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos, and ends with what we recommend. The most urgent items are made clear.

Will you go up on the roof?

Not unless it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed.

What’s the best way to book?

Simply phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.
