Drone roof survey in How Green: what you get

Drone roof surveys are available in How Green and throughout London and the South East, subject to airspace checks and the weather. Flights take place on weekdays and at weekends. Every address is checked for airspace restrictions first. You get a written report with close-up photographs and recommendations. To check whether your roof suits a drone survey, call 07833 053749 or send us an email. Typical surveys look at wind damage high on the roof and blocked valleys and parapet gutters, across valleys and parapet gutters, large and complex roofs and fragile roofs.

Some older homes in villages like How Green are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, and where it can wait, that’s said too.

Can I check my roof myself?

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.

Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.

Flying and imaging in How Green

Hever Castle, about 0.7 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around How Green. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Older houses across Kent often have handmade clay or peg tiles, and many have tile-hung walls. The county’s older buildings also include oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Church of St Peter, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps. Anyone responsible for a site like Hever Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Useful tips for How Green property owners

Small things make a difference. Some pointers:

  • Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit

We email the report to you, with close-up photographs from the flight. Findings are set out in plain English, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.

After a storm, check from the garden and the street. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone survey can show what has shifted.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Flat roof coverings wear out at different rates. We record the signs of age we can see.

Chimney stacks

From the air, a lean or a loose pot is easy to see. Each defect is photographed for the report.

Questions from How Green

Is drone flying allowed in How Green?

Normally it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Is my home in How Green listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

When does the report arrive?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed, ready to forward.

What do I do with the report?

You’ll get the report by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, like cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs like sagging are noted, but we don’t provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. If one is needed, the report says so.

How much is a survey?

Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package, confirmed before anything is booked.

How the survey works

The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. All told, expect about one to two hours at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. For a village or hamlet like How Green, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. We also look inside the roof space where it is safe.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know about parking before the day
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • Keep pets in another room

What we can’t see

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll suggest the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

What a survey costs

Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before booking. These are the things that affect it:

  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • Height and safe access

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, which starts from £400, including VAT. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Getting in touch

There’s no need for technical words. Just tell us:

  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage

Most bookings start with a short call: ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will ask a few questions about the roof. You will have a price before anything is arranged.
