Drone roof surveys in Leverstock Green

How a drone roof survey works in Leverstock Green

Before any flight, we check the airspace. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If permission is not given, we inspect by other means and explain why. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. If you are worried about lead work pulling away at abutments and debris building up in hidden gutters, we can find out what’s behind it, on valleys and parapet gutters, tall and steep roofs and large and complex roofs alike.

Older cottages and houses around Leverstock Green may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

The survey, step by step

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe vantage point, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take an hour or two for most houses, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In a smaller place like Leverstock Green, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
  4. Where there’s safe access, we check the loft as well.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Let us know about parking before the day

Advice

FAQs for Leverstock Green

Do you cover smaller places like Leverstock Green?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.

Is drone flying allowed in Leverstock Green?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only where it’s safe to do so. We check everything that can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.

What insurance do you have?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

We carry out surveys seven days a week. To arrange a date, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

What does a roof survey cost?

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The final figure depends on the roof and the package you choose.

How quickly is the report sent?

That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.

Airspace, weather and Leverstock Green roofs

Historic houses such as Batchwood Hall, about 3.5 miles east, show how far back building in the area around Leverstock Green goes. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of Holy Trinity, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. If you look after a building such as Leverstock Green Church of England Primary School, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once. Shop and office owners around Village Arcade St Albans may find that a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it.

  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • Which survey package you book

  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window

How the survey changes by roof type

Large commercial roofs

Many commercial roofs have fragile sheets or roof lights. With a drone, nobody has to go near them.

Valleys and parapet gutters

A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. You cannot see it from the street at all, but a drone shows it clearly.

What this survey can’t tell you

Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
  • Flights in strong wind or a downpour

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Fragile roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks
  • Tall and steep roofs

Why get it checked now?

Photographing a roof from the air does not touch it. Nothing is cracked or dislodged by footsteps, so you see the roof exactly as it is. Tradespeople may need to travel further to a smaller place like Leverstock Green, so it helps to plan roof work rather than call someone out in a hurry. A survey gives you that notice.
