Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Lower Denford
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It is also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. Where a flight is not possible, we explain why. Typical surveys look at blocked valleys and parapet gutters and slipped or missing slates on a high roof, on tall and steep roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and chimney stacks.
Some older homes in villages like Lower Denford are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
We write the report in plain English, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photograph where possible, and recommendations are put by urgency where it matters.

Different roofs, different checks
Valleys and parapet gutters
Some older terraces have a butterfly roof with a valley in the middle. You can’t see it from the street at all, but a drone shows it clearly.
Chimney stacks
Our drone check of a chimney is visual, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. If the flue needs a specialist, we will tell you.
Can I check my roof myself?
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.

What else we do in Lower Denford
What a drone roof survey looks like in Lower Denford
We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it’s listed or in a conservation area. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas.
For an older house near a landmark such as Hungerford Methodist Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

What we cannot see
It is useful to know what a survey won’t do before you book:
- Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- Flights in strong wind or a downpour
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will suggest the right survey. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers
- Fragile roofs
- Tall and steep roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Large and complex roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Chimney stacks
Common roof problems in Lower Denford
The top of a stack is the most exposed part of many roofs. Cracked flaunching, loose pots and eroded pointing are often invisible from below. Close-up drone photos show their condition.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- Cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below
- Debris building up in hidden gutters
- Plant growth and moss on the roof
- Standing water on a flat roof
Anyone responsible for a site like Hungerford Primary School will know that big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.
Before you book anyone
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- Whether the roof space is looked at, where there is one
- Is VAT included in the price?
Questions from Lower Denford
Is my home in Lower Denford listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Are there drone restrictions around Lower Denford?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not unless it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone.
How experienced are you?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Can you survey in bad weather?
A survey can typically go ahead in light rain. High wind or heavy rain can stop drone flights and make roof access unsafe, so if conditions are not right we will arrange another day with you.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs like sagging are noted, but we do not provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.
Landlord and commercial surveys in Lower Denford
Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on.
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. Recommendations are set out by urgency where it matters.
What happens on the day
Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey typically takes between one and two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Older rural homes like those around Lower Denford can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- Where there is safe access, we check the loft as well.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know about parking near the property
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
