Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Lydd-on-Sea

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and within the 120-metre limit that applies to all drones in the open category. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. We never fly where it is not safe. We survey large and complex roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and valleys and parapet gutters, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below and cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots.

Villages like Lydd-on-Sea often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. High wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

The survey, step by step

When we arrive, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that is worrying you. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Older rural homes like those around Lydd-on-Sea can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. If permission is needed, we ask for it ahead of the visit.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.

Honest limits

It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:

  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

Drones, thermal imaging and Lydd-on-Sea roofs

Lydd-on-Sea is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. Lydd-on-Sea is about 2 miles from Lydd Airport, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly.

Anyone responsible for a site like Greatstone Primary School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. If you live in an older home near St Peter's, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

Lydd-on-Sea is about 10 miles south-west of Hythe, in Kent. We carry out drone roof surveys in Lydd-on-Sea for houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings, with a written report and photographs every time. Our Kent coverage includes Lydd-on-Sea. We also survey roofs in Canterbury.

Tips from our surveys

You don’t need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:

  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Keep pets indoors during the flight

We email the report to you, including the close-up photos taken by the drone. Each finding is explained in plain words, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.

Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On high roofs, leave clearing to a professional. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.

Common questions in Lydd-on-Sea

Is drone flying allowed in Lydd-on-Sea?

Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Lydd-on-Sea is about 2 miles from Lydd Airport, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.

Do you cover smaller places like Lydd-on-Sea?

Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

Will you walk on the roof?

Not unless it’s safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and details are available on request.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.

Does the weather affect the survey?

Light rain doesn’t normally stop a survey, and it can even help show where water is getting in. Heavy rain or strong wind can ground a drone and make the roof unsafe, so if conditions aren’t right we will arrange another day with you.

What will the report tell me?

A written report with photos, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations, by urgency where it matters. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.

Why get it checked now?

Photographing a roof from the air doesn’t touch it. Fragile slates and tiles stay as they are, so you see the roof exactly as it is. Older cottages and farmhouses around Lydd-on-Sea can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.

We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you’d like to know.

Prices for drone roof surveys in Lydd-on-Sea

What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. The main factors are:

  • Roof area
  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • House, block, shop or office
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets

Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all including VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

Helping us price your survey

We’ll usually ask about:

  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors
  • Dates you are working to, like exchange
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block

Photos help, if you have them. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

DIY checks: what’s safe

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
