Drone roof survey in Lydd: what you get
We fly a sub-250g drone, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. We never fly where it is not safe. Common reasons to book are cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots and worn lead at chimneys and walls, across fragile roofs, chimney stacks and flat roofs on upper floors.
In smaller places like Lydd, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from ground level. The parts you can’t see, such as rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. The forecast decides the day, as calm, dry conditions suit both. Even so, a close-up image often shows wear on ridges and flashings that a view from the ground misses.
If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

Leave it or get it looked at?
Planning roof work without seeing the roof is a gamble. You get photos of every part we can see, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. That helps you put the work in order. Around Lydd, a leak in an older house can soak into timbers and plaster, and that is a much bigger job than the original defect.
The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Our price is from £400, including VAT.
What you get with us
- More than 5,000 surveys completed
- Visits on any day of the week
- Independent findings on the roof’s condition
- A written report with photos
How the survey works
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. If you have questions on the day, just ask. For a survey in Lydd, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. Let us know about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.
- First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
- We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
- Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
- We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Let us know about parking near the property

Lydd: your questions answered
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Lydd?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
Are there drone restrictions around Lydd?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Lydd Airport is about 2 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.
When does the report arrive?
That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. Reports are sent by email.
Do you look in the roof space?
Normally, if there is one and it can be reached safely. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We don’t sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show.
What happens after the survey?
The report arrives by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Surveys for landlords and agents in Lydd
Landlords and letting agents in Lydd book surveys as well as householders. A report with photographs gives you a clear record of the roof, which helps you plan work between tenancies.
With a portfolio of properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To discuss a number of properties, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the addresses.
What you can safely check yourself
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Honest limits
Before booking, it is worth knowing what a survey will not do:
- Flights in high wind or heavy rain
- Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.
What we look at
- Tall and steep roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Fragile roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Large and complex roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
What we’re asked to look at in Lydd
Parapet gutters, box gutters and central valleys sit out of sight. Debris collects where nobody looks, until it causes a leak inside. A drone shows them clearly from above.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Lead work pulling away at abutments
- Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
- Vegetation in valleys and gutters
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Lydd Primary School, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- How long the report takes to arrive
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
Drone roof surveys in Lydd: local notes
Lydd is within about 3 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Lydd is about 2 miles from Lydd Airport, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly.
The streets around a church such as All Saints Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
