Drone roof survey in New Addington: what you get
The weather decides whether a drone can fly. Strong wind or a downpour rules out a flight, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. Common reasons to book are blistered or cracked flat roof coverings and cracked mortar along the ridge, across tall and steep roofs, large and complex roofs and fragile roofs.
Many London roofs are hidden from the pavement: butterfly roofs behind parapets, dormer tops and flat roofs over back additions. Drone photos and thermal images can show parts of a roof that are hard to reach safely. The weather decides the day: both drones and thermal cameras need the right conditions. What a thermal image shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

Honest limits
To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:
- A flight where airspace permission is refused
- A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
- A structural engineer’s report
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you before you book. What our survey covers.
What we look at
- Fragile roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Tall and steep roofs
- Large and complex roofs
What we look for on each type of roof
Ridges and hips
Loose ridge pieces can be lifted in a storm. Finding them early keeps them from coming down.
Valleys and parapet gutters
A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. You cannot see it from the street at all, but it’s plain to see from the air.
When to book a survey in New Addington
Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and fragile sheet roofs are dangerous to walk on. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.
Look out for signs like these:
- Lead work pulling away at abutments
- Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
- Outlets choked with leaves and silt
If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near St Edward King and Confessor, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.
Questions to ask before booking
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
How the survey works
On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that is worrying you. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely, from the ground, from windows, in the roof space and by drone where it applies. The survey usually takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. In converted houses and mansion blocks, the loft hatch is frequently on a shared landing. Where that’s the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.
- We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
- We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- We also look inside the loft space where it’s safe.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.
How to prepare
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Leave side gates unlocked
How to book

New Addington: your questions answered
Is my home in New Addington listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Can parking be tricky for a visit in New Addington?
London parking needs a little planning, so let us know about permits, bays or a driveway when you book. The visit is then planned around what’s available.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Let us know your preferred days when you book.
Do I need to be at home?
It depends on what we need to see. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in, while outside access can be discussed as you book.
What does a roof survey cost?
Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Our three packages are Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included.
Are you structural engineers?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs like sagging are noted, but we don’t provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.
Are you insured?
Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.

Tips from our surveys
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- A word with neighbours beforehand helps
- Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
- Allow for a change of day in poor weather
- Shut pets inside while we fly
You get an in-person consultation with the Premium Survey to talk through the photographs and findings. You can ask about anything that is not clear.
Every so often, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.
