Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Northaw Valley
From the air, the outer surfaces are clear, but it can’t see inside. Where there is safe access, we look in the loft space too, because the underside tells its own story. Together, the two give a fuller picture. Your report shows the drone photos alongside what we saw in the loft. Where the loft can’t be reached safely, we note it. We are frequently asked to look into blocked valleys and parapet gutters and lifted or split lead flashings, across flat roofs on upper floors, tall and steep roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.
In a small place like Northaw Valley, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover
Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:
- A structural engineer’s report
- Close-up photos of next door’s property
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.
Roof types and parts we check

- Fragile roofs

- Large and complex roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Tall and steep roofs
Practical tips
Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
- Expect us to rearrange if it is too windy or wet
Premium also includes a 12-month follow-up. It shows whether anything has moved or worn since the first visit.
After a storm, check from the garden and the street. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone survey can show what has shifted.
FAQs for Northaw Valley
How do I find out if my home in Northaw Valley is listed?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Is Northaw Valley within the area you cover?
Yes, Northaw Valley is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We check the parts we are given access to.
Can the drone do thermal imaging?
No, the drone survey is photographic. For thermal imaging, look at the Premium Survey or our thermal roof survey, and its findings are checked with moisture readings.
How do I book a survey in Northaw Valley?
The quickest way is to phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. Give us the address and a few details about the roof. We survey on any day of the week.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Strong wind or heavy rain stops a flight. Whether we can fly depends on the conditions on the day. If it is unsuitable, we will agree another date or inspect by other means.
Are you insured?
Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.

How the survey works
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. Most surveys take between one and two hours on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. In a small place like Northaw Valley, access is normally the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
- We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
- The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.
How to prepare
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Note where any stains or damp appear

Drone roof surveys in Northaw Valley: local notes
Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. About 2.4 miles west lies Wyllyotts Manor, a reminder of how long the area around Northaw Valley has been built on. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs.
If you look after a building such as St. John's Senior School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. The streets around a church such as Parish Church of St Thomas A Becket are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

Common roof problems in Northaw Valley
Many roofs are never seen properly from the ground. You can’t see the back slope, the valleys or the chimney tops. Faults there can go unnoticed for years.
These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:
- Vegetation in valleys and gutters
- Lead work pulling away at abutments
- Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
For businesses in and around places such as Spires Shopping Centre, large commercial roofs are frequently easiest to see by drone or thermal camera.
