- Debris building up in hidden gutters
- Wind damage high on the roof
Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Northchapel
Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or is not safe, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. If a drone isn’t the right tool, we’ll say so. Typical surveys look at cracked mortar along the ridge and plant growth and moss on the roof, across flat roofs on upper floors, large and complex roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.
In a village or hamlet like Northchapel, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. You will see the good as well as the bad.

Tips that help
Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Let us know the exact address when booking
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
- Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
Premium also includes a 12-month follow-up. It helps you see how the roof has changed over the year.
Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Take photos of any changes.
How it works
The visit usually starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. In total, it takes between one and two hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. In a hamlet or village like Northchapel, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
- We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
- Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
- The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
- We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
How to prepare
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we are coming
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building

Prices for drone roof surveys in Northchapel
When we price a survey, we consider:
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- The roof’s overall size
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
Every price we give includes VAT. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. You will know the price for your roof before you book.
Getting in touch
There is no need for technical words. It is enough to let us know:
- Dates you’re working to, such as exchange
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- The address and postcode of the property
Photos help, if you have them. Take them safely from ground level or a window, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To get started, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.
What we look for on each type of roof
Ridges and hips
Ridges may be bedded in mortar or mechanically fixed. We record what we see of their condition.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Felt frequently lasts around 15 to 20 years, EPDM rubber around 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30. We record the signs of age we can see.
Drones, thermal imaging and Northchapel roofs
Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Many older homes in Sussex have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help.
Take an older house close to The Parish Church of St Michael: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. Take a building like Northchapel Community Primary School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Historic houses like Petworth House, about 4.9 miles south, show how far back building around Northchapel goes. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey by drone or thermal camera does not touch the roof itself.

Northchapel: your questions answered
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Northchapel?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Is Northchapel within the area you cover?
Yes, Northchapel is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.
How do I arrange a drone roof survey in Northchapel?
The quickest way is to ring 07833 053749 or email us. Tell us the address and a little about the roof, and we’ll recommend the right survey. Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.
How much is a survey?
Prices start from £400, including VAT. We confirm the price for your survey before booking. To get a price, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
What if my home is near an airport?
Only with the right permission. Airports such as Gatwick, Luton and Southampton have flight restriction zones, where the airport or air traffic control must give permission first. If permission is not given, the roof is inspected from other safe viewpoints.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Leaving a slipped slate or a blocked valley can turn a small fault into a leak. Finding them now means less to put right, whatever height the roof is. Older and listed buildings around Northchapel may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so leaving a defect until it is urgent leaves less time to plan.
Prices start from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, access and which survey you book.
