Drone roof surveys in Rye

Drone roof surveys in Rye: local notes

Rye lies within about 2 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. In Sussex, older roofs are frequently handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs, and oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of East Sussex’s older buildings. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.

Take a building like Rye Community Primary School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Rye means lost rooms as well as repairs. Lamb House lies about 0.1 miles south-east, so building around Rye goes back a long way. Photos from the air and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

Rye is about 9 miles north-east of Hastings, in East Sussex. We carry out drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Rye and nearby. Across East Sussex, we cover Rye and the places around it. You can also see our page for Maidstone.

How a drone roof survey works in Rye

We fly a sub-250g drone, and we are a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. Safety comes first on every visit. We’re often asked to look into coverings that have slipped high up on the roof and loose ridge and hip tiles, on fragile roofs, chimney stacks and valleys and parapet gutters.

Around Rye, lots of roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. The forecast decides the day. Even so, a close-up image often shows wear on ridges and flashings that a view from the ground misses.

We write the report in plain English, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Photographs show what each point refers to, with the urgent items made clear.

Why it is worth a survey now in Rye

Planning roof work without seeing the roof is a gamble. Our report shows the condition of each area. You can tackle the urgent items first. Blocked gutters on homes around Rye overflow and soak walls. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.

One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

The survey, step by step

We do not take risks to get a closer look. We inspect whatever is safely visible, and if part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. Most visits take about one to two hours on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a smaller place like Rye, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
  4. We also look inside the roof space where it is safe.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Preparing for the visit

Different roofs, different checks

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Leaks often start at outlets, edges and around plant. They’re all captured in close-up.

Chimney stacks

Our drone check of a chimney is visual, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. We will say if a specialist is needed.

Honest limits

No survey can tell you everything, and it’s better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

  • A flight on a day when the weather is not safe
  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we check

  • Fragile roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Valleys and parapet gutters

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.

Common questions in Rye

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Rye?

Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.

Do you cover smaller places like Rye?

Yes. Rye is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.

How long will you be at the property?

Most surveys take about 1–2 hours for a house, and more on a big or complicated roof. The report follows by email.

What insurance do you have?

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.

What’s in the report?

You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos. The most urgent items are made clear.

Do I need to be at home?

Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

Before and after the survey

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Let us know the exact address when you book
  • Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
  • Check there is room outside for the drone to take off
  • Check the loft can be reached

There is a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It helps you see how the roof has changed over the year, and whether work has done its job.

Every so often, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Take photos of any changes.
