Drone roof survey in Salford, Milton Keynes
Drone roof surveys around Salford, with a written report you can act on. Book a weekday or weekend visit.
- Moss and weeds taking hold up top
- Damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below
- Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
Checking the roof from ground level
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Salford
Drones need reasonable weather. Strong wind or heavy rain rules out a flight, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. We are frequently asked to look into worn lead at chimneys and walls and wind damage high on the roof, on large and complex roofs, tall and steep roofs and flat roofs on upper floors.
Older buildings in small places like Salford may be listed or in a conservation area. A look by drone or thermal camera does not touch the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

How the survey works
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit normally takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Somewhere like Salford needs a little journey planning: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect what can be seen safely, inside and out.
- You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
- Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
- The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
- The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

Common questions in Salford
Is drone flying allowed in Salford?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.
Is my home in Salford listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
How many surveys have you done?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs.
How long does the survey take?
Expect it to take about one to two hours at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. The written report follows by email.
What insurance do you have?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report, and it doesn’t include calculations. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
Common roof problems in Salford
From the pavement, most of a tall roof is out of sight. Rear slopes, valleys and the tops of chimneys are hidden. Problems in those places often go unseen until they leak.
People normally book a survey after spotting one of these:
- Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
- Worn lead at chimneys and walls
- Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
- Damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below
If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary the Virgin, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

Tips that help
You do not need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:
- Check there is room outside for the drone to take off
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
- Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
- Shut pets inside while we fly
File the report and photos with your home documents. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys, and they help if you sell.
Keep the loft space ventilated. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation, and it is something only an inside check will show. Check insulation doesn’t block the airflow.
Drones, thermal imaging and Salford roofs
Woburn Abbey, about 4.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Salford. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from ground level, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

How the survey changes by roof type
Large commercial roofs
Big roofs on offices, warehouses and units take time to inspect. The drone covers the roof area by area.
Valleys and parapet gutters
When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Photographing a roof from the air does not touch it. Fragile slates and tiles stay as they are, so you see the roof exactly as it is. Older and listed buildings around Salford may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.
One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
