Book a drone roof survey in Shepway

The survey, step by step

We check the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. All in, the survey usually takes between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Homes around Shepway often have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. The loft, where there’s safe access, completes the picture.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Advice

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Shepway

A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. We keep the camera on the roof we are surveying, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is shared, a word with next door beforehand helps. We survey the roof you’ve asked us to look at. Each flight is kept short and stays focused on the roof we’re there to survey. If you are worried about cracked mortar along the ridge and outlets choked with leaves and silt, we can find out what’s behind it.

Around Shepway, older homes can have thin loft insulation and later additions with roofs of their own. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.

What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, such as when you want to compare after future work.

What a survey costs

All our prices include VAT. The things that change the price are:

  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • How big the roof is
  • The shape of the roof and its details

We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Getting in touch

You do not need to know any roofing terms. Just tell us:

  • Dates you’re working to, such as exchange
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • What kind of property and roof it is

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, and you can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email to find out.

Before and after the survey

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:

  • Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
  • Let us know the exact address when booking
  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn

The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. The photos show the location and extent of every problem.

Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Take photos of any changes.

Airspace, weather and Shepway roofs

We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. Historic houses such as Stoneacre, about 1.4 miles east, show how far back building in the area around Shepway goes. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

Anyone responsible for a site like Greenfields Community Primary School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. Shop and office owners around The Mall Maidstone may find that a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it.

Shepway is about 1 mile south-east of Maidstone, in Kent. We carry out drone roof surveys in Shepway for houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings. Shepway is one of the places in Kent where we work.

We also work in nearby towns such as Sittingbourne (10 miles north-east), Royal Tunbridge Wells (15 miles south-west), Gravesend (14 miles north-west), Tonbridge (12 miles west), Faversham (15 miles east) and Northfleet (15 miles north-west).

Different roofs, different checks

Large commercial roofs

Big roofs on offices, warehouses and units take time to inspect. The drone covers the roof area by area.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

The flat roof on top of a block is rarely looked at. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.

Common roof problems in Shepway

Strong winds can lift slates, tiles and ridge pieces. It’s hard to tell from below what has shifted. A drone shows what has slipped, lifted or gone.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
  • Standing water on a flat roof
  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
  • Vegetation in valleys and gutters

The streets around a church like St Martin's Church are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Whether the loft is part of the inspection
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • What happens after the report arrives
  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID

What a roof survey includes

Checking the roof from ground level

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Questions from Shepway

Do you cover smaller places like Shepway?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Shepway?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

What happens after the survey?

The report comes by email, and what you do next is up to you: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.

How much does a drone roof survey cost in Shepway?

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. We confirm the price for the job before booking. To get a price, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Just say which days work for you.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.

What if it is windy or raining on the day?

Strong wind or heavy rain stops a flight. Whether we can fly depends on the conditions on the day. If it is unsuitable, we’ll agree another date or inspect by other means.
