Drone roof surveys around Sholden Meadows
Sholden Meadows is within about 2 miles of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. There are several hotels within about a mile and a half of Sholden Meadows, and hotels, like offices and blocks of flats, often have flat roofs. If you look after one, a large roof can be surveyed without guests having anyone working above them.
Walmer Castle lies about 2.1 miles south-east, so building around Sholden Meadows goes back a long way. For older roofs nearby, a look from the air or with a thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition. If you run a hotel or guest house in or near Sholden Meadows, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use, so it pays to find faults before guests do.

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Sholden Meadows
They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from the ground. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or isn’t safe, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. We check the airspace for your address ahead of the visit. If a drone isn’t the right tool, we’ll say so. We’re often asked to look into ridge pieces that have lifted and outlets choked with leaves and silt, across chimney stacks, fragile roofs and tall and steep roofs.
Older buildings in small places like Sholden Meadows may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photo where possible.

What we do, step by step
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Older rural homes like those around Sholden Meadows can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
- We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
- We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
- We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
- We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
Before the survey
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared

Sholden Meadows: your questions answered
Is my home in Sholden Meadows listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Is drone flying allowed in Sholden Meadows?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Let us know which days suit you when booking.
What if it rains on the day?
Light rain does not usually stop a survey, and it can even help show where water is getting in. High wind or heavy rain can stop drone flights and make roof access unsafe, so if conditions are not right we will arrange another day with you.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, like cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, if the building owner or managing agent agrees access. We look at the parts we are given access to, and the report makes that clear.
Do I need to be at home?
That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access; we’ll agree the details as you book.
Honest limits
It’s useful to know what a survey will not do before you book:
- A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
- A flight where airspace permission is refused
- A structural engineer’s report
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.
What this survey covers
- Tall and steep roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Fragile roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Large and complex roofs
DIY checks: what’s safe
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Different roofs, different checks
Ridges and hips
Wind lifts loose ridge and hip tiles. Finding them early keeps them from coming down.
Steep slate and tile slopes
On slate roofs, slipped slates often point to corroded nails. We can see the extent of it from above.
Common roof problems in Sholden Meadows
Hidden gutters and valleys are easy to overlook. Leaves, silt and plant growth build up unseen, until it causes a leak inside. From above, they’re easy to see.
A survey can pick up problems like:
- Flashings that have come away
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
- Wind damage high on the roof
If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Nicholas, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
