Drone roof survey in Singlewell or Ifield: what you get
Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They also suit fragile roofs that nobody should walk on. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. If a drone is not the right tool, we’ll say so. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, large and complex roofs and fragile roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are eroded pointing on a chimney stack and damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below.
Somewhere as small as Singlewell or Ifield, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from ground level. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photographs show what each point refers to.

What this survey can’t tell you
It helps to know what a survey won’t do before you book:
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll point you to the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and does not.
What this survey covers
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Fragile roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Tall and steep roofs
- Large and complex roofs
What we look for on each type of roof
Large commercial roofs
Cement sheet roofs on buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor.
Ridges and hips
Ridges may be bedded in mortar or mechanically fixed. We record what we see of their condition.
Can I check my roof myself?
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in.
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Singlewell or Ifield questions
Is drone flying allowed in Singlewell or Ifield?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Is my home in Singlewell or Ifield listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Can you survey in bad weather?
A survey can normally go ahead in light rain, and it can even help show where water is getting in. Heavy rain or strong wind can ground a drone and make the roof unsafe, so if conditions aren’t right we will arrange another day with you.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs like sagging are noted, but we do not provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.
How much is a survey?
Prices start from £400, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.
What a survey costs
What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. The main factors are:
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- Which survey package you book
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
What we need to know
To price your survey accurately, we will ask about:
- Your timetable, such as an exchange date
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- What kind of property and roof it is
Our phone lines are open seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. To book or ask a question, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.
The survey, step by step
We look at the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey typically takes an hour or two at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. For a village or hamlet like Singlewell or Ifield, the journey is planned in advance: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.
- We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
- A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- We also look inside the loft space where it is safe.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
Preparing for the visit
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we are coming
