How a drone roof survey works in Speen
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photos of those roofs from the air. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It’s also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. Where a flight is not possible, we explain why. If you’ve noticed cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below and moss and weeds taking hold up top, we can find out what’s behind it, on flat roofs on upper floors, fragile roofs and chimney stacks alike.
Villages like Speen frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. You will see the good as well as the bad.

What a survey costs
Survey packages start from £150, including VAT. The price for your roof depends on:
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
- Which survey package you book
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- Height and safe access
A Basic Survey starts from £150, inc. VAT. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. You will know the price for your survey before booking.
Helping us price your survey
Getting the details right at the start saves time. Please include:
- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- What kind of property and roof it is
- When you need the report by
A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: ring 07833 053749 or send us an email, and we’ll ask about the building and what you need. The price is agreed before a date is set.
Roof by roof
Valleys and parapet gutters
When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.
Steep slate and tile slopes
Steep roofs are risky to walk on. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position.
Practical tips
There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:
- Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
- Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
- Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
- Expect us to rearrange if it is too windy or wet
The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. The photos show the location and extent of every problem, so their quotes cover the same ground.
Don’t block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up, and it is something only an inside check will show. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.
Do you need a drone roof survey in Speen?
Hidden gutters and valleys are easy to overlook. Debris collects where nobody looks, until it causes a leak inside. A drone shows them clearly from above.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
- Moss and weeds taking hold up top
- Lifted or split lead flashings
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
For an older house near a landmark like Speen Church (Baptist), tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- What the survey will not cover
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- What follow-up you get after the report
Your questions about drone roof surveys in Speen
How do I find out if my home in Speen is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Are there drone restrictions around Speen?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.
Are you insured?
Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, like cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
When does the report arrive?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email, ready to forward.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only when it is safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.

How it works
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, like when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes about one to two hours for most houses, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. In a small place like Speen, access is usually the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- Where there is safe access, we check the loft as well.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
Getting ready for the survey
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
Arrange a survey
Getting a price is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or email us and give us a few details about the property and we’ll recommend the right survey. We confirm the price before anything is booked.
Advice
For landlords and managing agents
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps with budgets and planning.
Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget, putting the urgent items at the top.
Airspace, weather and Speen roofs
Hughenden Manor, about 3.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Speen. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years. A number of Buckinghamshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help.
If you look after a building such as Speen CofE VA School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.
