Drones, thermal imaging and St Peter's roofs

St Peter's lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.

Historic houses like Quex Park, about 4.2 miles west, show how far back building around St Peter's goes. For older roofs nearby, a look by drone or thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition. If you run a hotel or guest house in or near St Peter's, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use, so it pays to find faults before guests do.

Drone roof survey in St Peter's: what you get

A drone shows the outside of a roof very well, but it can’t see inside. We check the loft from inside where it is safe, because the underside tells its own story. Inside and out together tell you far more. Your report shows the drone photos alongside what we saw in the loft. Where the loft cannot be reached safely, we note it. If you are worried about standing water on a flat roof and moss and weeds taking hold up top, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

Around St Peter's, a good many roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. The parts you cannot see, such as rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. The forecast decides the day. Close-up images often show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that cannot be judged properly from the ground.

Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

When you need someone else

Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt

If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Roofs we survey in St Peter's

  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Chimney stacks

Should I look at the roof myself first?

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date.

When to book a survey in St Peter's

Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Older slates and tiles break easily, and fragile sheet roofs are dangerous to walk on. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Loose ridge and hip tiles
  • Wind damage high on the roof
  • Chimney tops in poor condition
  • Flashings that have come away

The streets around a church like Parish Church of St Peter the Apostle are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • How soon the report will arrive
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • What experience they bring

Tips that help

Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:

  • Check there’s room outside for the drone to take off
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed
  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
  • Keep pets indoors during the flight

We email the report to you, with close-up photos from the flight. Each finding is explained in plain words, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.

Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Photograph anything new.

How we price drone roof surveys

To price your survey, we check:

  • Whether it is a home or a commercial building
  • Height and safe access
  • How big the roof is
  • Which survey package you book

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. You will know the figure before booking.

Helping us price your survey

If you can, have these to hand when you contact us:

  • The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
  • Dates you’re working to, like exchange
  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, so call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the details.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in St Peter's

Does a conservation area affect roof work in St Peter's?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

Do you cover smaller places like St Peter's?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Do you hold CAA registration for the drone?

We are. Our Flyer ID and Operator ID come from the CAA, and we fly a drone that weighs under 250g, kept within sight on every flight.

Can you fly a drone in central London?

Some areas need permission from NATS before any flight. If permission isn’t possible, we inspect by other means.

How long does the visit take?

The visit typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. We’ll give you an idea of timing as you book.

Does someone need to be in?

Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only when it’s safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest.

How it works

Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photos. As for time on site, it usually takes an hour or two for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. In a smaller place like St Peter's, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed
  • Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller

How to book
