How a drone roof survey works in Stonebridge

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We do not fly in strong wind or heavy rain, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We are often asked to look into eroded pointing on a chimney stack and outlets choked with leaves and silt, across tall and steep roofs, chimney stacks and valleys and parapet gutters.

Somewhere as small as Stonebridge, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from the ground. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, with the urgent items made clear.

Why get it checked now?

Faults on high roofs tend to be found late. By then, timbers, ceilings and insulation may be wet. Looking from above picks up the early signs. Older and listed buildings around Stonebridge may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, which starts from £400, including VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you’d like to know.

What we do, step by step

We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. Most surveys take about 1–2 hours at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Rural addresses near Stonebridge can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

What a drone roof survey does not cover

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
  • A flight on a day when the weather is not safe
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

Should I look at the roof myself first?

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.

Airspace, weather and Stonebridge roofs

Stonebridge is within about 3 miles of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. Stonebridge is about 3 miles from London Southend Airport, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly.

Southchurch Hall lies about 2.1 miles south-west, so building around Stonebridge goes back a long way. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. Anyone responsible for a site like Barling Magna Primary Academy will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Stonebridge is about 2 miles north-west of Shoeburyness, in Southend-on-Sea. Stonebridge gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful inspection, photos and a written report. Across Southend-on-Sea, we cover Stonebridge and the places around it. For surveys nearby, see our Chelmsford page.

Drone roof surveys in SS3 are booked the same way as anywhere else. If you need a drone roof survey at a property on Barrow Hall Road, Barling Road and Rebels Lane or a nearby road, we can help. If you are just outside Stonebridge, we cover Little Wakering (1 mile east), Barling (1 mile north-east), Southchurch (2 miles south-west), North Shoebury (2 miles south-east) and Sutton (2 miles west). Within a short drive, we also cover Southend-on-Sea (3 miles west), Prittlewell (3 miles west), Leigh-on-Sea (5 miles west), Westcliff-on-Sea (3 miles south-west), Chalkwell (4 miles west) and Eastwood (4 miles west).

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out with the most urgent first where relevant.

Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client.

Useful tips for Stonebridge property owners

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:

  • Check there is room outside for the drone to take off
  • Expect us to rearrange if it is too windy or wet
  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Make sure the loft can be reached

The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. The photos show the location and extent of every problem, so their quotes cover the same ground.

Plan a drone survey every few years for tall or large roofs. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, so small faults are dealt with early.

Stonebridge questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Stonebridge?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Will you come out to Stonebridge?

Yes, Stonebridge is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we’re not structural engineers and don’t carry out calculations. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

Are you insured?

Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and details are available on request.

Are you registered with the CAA?

Yes, we are. The CAA has issued us a Flyer ID and an Operator ID, and we fly a drone that weighs under 250g, kept within sight on every flight.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once access has been agreed. Roofs over flats are frequently shared, so we need permission from the freeholder or managing agent. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.

What if my home is near an airport?

Sometimes, with permission. Confirmed flight restriction zones include Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Stansted, Luton and Southampton, among others, where the airport or air traffic control must give permission first. Without it, we inspect from other safe viewpoints.
