Drone roof survey in Stowting Common

Drones need reasonable weather. Strong wind or heavy rain rules out a flight, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we will talk about another date. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. We survey large and complex roofs, tall and steep roofs and flat roofs on upper floors, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are slipped or missing slates on a high roof and flashings that have come away.

In a village or hamlet like Stowting Common, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Checking the roof from the ground

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Stowting Common

Is my home in Stowting Common listed or in a conservation area?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Do you cover smaller places like Stowting Common?

Yes. Stowting Common is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we are not structural engineers and do not carry out calculations. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

Will the drone film my neighbours?

We take care around neighbouring homes. The camera is pointed at your roof, not next door. Letting neighbours know in advance helps.

Can you fly a drone in central London?

It depends where in central London. Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas that need NATS permission. Every address is checked first.

Is a drone roof survey a thermal survey?

The drone survey is a photographic inspection. Thermal imaging is carried out separately, included in our Premium Survey.

What happens after the survey?

We email you the written report with photographs and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.

What this survey cannot tell you

It helps to know what a survey will not do before you book:

  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Fragile roofs
  • Chimney stacks

What we look for on each type of roof

Ridges and hips

Wind lifts loose ridge and hip tiles. Finding them early keeps them from coming down.

Steep slate and tile slopes

Old slates and clay tiles can crack underfoot. The drone sees them without touching them, so the survey does not add damage.

Flying and imaging in Stowting Common

The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons.

Anyone responsible for a site like Stowting Church of England Primary School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. Historic houses like Westenhanger Castle, about 3.7 miles south, show how far back building around Stowting Common goes. For older roofs nearby, a look by drone or thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition. Take an older house close to Church of St Mary: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

The survey, step by step

Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take between one and two hours at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Rural addresses near Stowting Common can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Why get it checked now?

Photos from a drone survey show how the roof looks today. Next time, you can compare and see what has moved or worn. It helps when you plan ahead. In a place like Stowting Common, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.
