About our drone roof survey in Woodland
Every flight starts with an airspace check. Near protected airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. We survey tall and steep roofs, chimney stacks and fragile roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are blistered or cracked flat roof coverings and ridge pieces that have lifted.
In a small place like Woodland, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent, whichever applies.

Common questions in Woodland
Is drone flying allowed in Woodland?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
How do I find out if my home in Woodland is listed?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the survey around it.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.
Will I get photos?
Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.
How soon will I get the report?
That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.
How it works
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. If you have questions on the day, just ask. In a hamlet or village like Woodland, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
- Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
- On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
- The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

Advice
What affects the cost of drone roof surveys
When we price a survey, we consider:
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
- Height and safe access
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.
Booking your survey
You don’t need to know any roofing terms. Just let us know:
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- When you need the report by
- What’s prompted the survey
Booking is simple: just call 07833 053749 or email us and give us a few details about the property and we will explain which survey suits. The price is agreed up front.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Other services in Woodland
What we look for on each type of roof
Ridges and hips
Ridges and hips are the most exposed parts of a pitched roof. A drone shows cracked mortar and loose ridge tiles.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Flat roofs on tall buildings are often seen by nobody. From above, standing water, splits and tired upstands are clear.
When you need someone else
A survey is a proper look at the roof, but it can’t do everything. Its limits include:
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before you book. What our survey covers.
What we look at
- Tall and steep roofs
- Large and complex roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Fragile roofs
What happens if roof problems are left?
Close-up photos make conversations with roofers clearer. You can show exactly where the problem is, which helps when you ask for quotes. Older cottages and farmhouses around Woodland can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.

Drones, thermal imaging and Woodland roofs
Woodland is within about 5 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons.
Acrise Place lies about 2.9 miles east, so building around Woodland goes back a long way. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. Take a building like Lyminge Church of England Primary School: big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.
