Drone roof survey in Tonge, Kent
Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Tonge. We have completed more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
- Damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below
- Debris building up in hidden gutters
- Flashings that have come away
Roof by roof
Ridges and hips
Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. We record what we see of their condition.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Flat roofs on tall buildings are often seen by nobody. From above, standing water, splits and tired upstands are clear.
About our drone roof survey in Tonge
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It is also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. If we cannot fly, we tell you why. We are often asked to look into wind damage high on the roof and loose ridge and hip tiles, across fragile roofs, tall and steep roofs and flat roofs on upper floors.
Older buildings in small places like Tonge may be listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

What a drone roof survey does not cover
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- Flights in high wind or heavy rain
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Useful tips for Tonge property owners
You do not need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:
- Check there’s room outside for the drone to take off
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
- Move stored items away from the hatch
- Shut pets inside while we fly
There’s a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It shows whether anything has moved or worn since the first visit, and whether work has done its job.
Every so often, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.

Tonge questions
Is my home in Tonge listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Do you cover smaller places like Tonge?
Yes, we do. Our area covers London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Can you fly a drone near an airport?
Flight restriction zones around protected airports need permission from the airport or air traffic control before any flight. We check the airspace for your address and seek permission where it is needed. If it isn’t given, we inspect by other means.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so we need permission from the freeholder or managing agent. We can only inspect what we are given access to.
Are you insured?
We’re covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, so you can see what we mean.
Drones, thermal imaging and Tonge roofs
Tonge lies within about 1 mile of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Many older homes in Kent have handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles held by pegs through two holes, and tile-hanging on their upper walls. The county’s older buildings also include oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Giles, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. Take a building like Sittingbourne Community College: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
Tonge is about 2 miles east of Sittingbourne, in Kent. In Tonge, as across Kent, every roof gets the same careful survey. Tonge is one of the places in Kent we cover for drone roof surveys. We also survey roofs in Maidstone.

Further out, we also cover Maidstone (12 miles south-west), Ashford (15 miles south), Canterbury (14 miles east), Whitstable (11 miles east), Faversham (5 miles south-east) and Herne Bay (15 miles east).

DIY checks: what’s safe
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Landlords, agents and block managers in Tonge
Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed ahead of time. Surveys run seven days a week, which helps when tenants work during the week.
Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client.
How the survey works
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. You’re welcome to ask questions while we are there. Older rural homes like those around Tonge can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
- Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
- On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
- The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
- We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
Before we arrive
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
