Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in West Hill

Every flight starts with an airspace check. Near protected airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and explain why. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. Common reasons to book are wind damage high on the roof and loose ridge and hip tiles, on large and complex roofs, chimney stacks and flat roofs on upper floors.

Older cottages and houses around West Hill may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. Thermal patterns and close-up photos together give a fuller picture of the roof. Anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.

Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Roof by roof

Chimney stacks

Chimney tops are hard to see from the ground. Close-up photos show the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.

Ridges and hips

Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. We record what we see of their condition.

West Hill questions

Is my home in West Hill listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Will you come out to West Hill?

Yes, West Hill is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Are you insured?

We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Does your drone take thermal images?

The drone survey is a photographic inspection. Thermal imaging is a separate check, and it’s part of the Premium Survey.

Does the weather affect a drone survey?

High wind or heavy rain stops a flight. Whether we can fly depends on the conditions on the day. If we cannot fly, we will arrange another day or inspect by other means.

What happens next?

The report arrives by email. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.

Does the report include photos?

Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show.

How it works

We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the roof space if there’s safe access. In total, it takes an hour or two on an ordinary house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. With a bit of garden around a house, as there often is around West Hill, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. Inside, the loft is checked where it can be reached safely.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
  5. We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
  • Let us know about parking near the property
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

Advice

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.

Landlord and commercial surveys in West Hill

Any of our surveys can be booked by landlords, agents and building managers in West Hill. To discuss a property or a block, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, putting the urgent items at the top.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Photographing a roof from the air doesn’t touch it. Nothing is cracked or dislodged by footsteps, so the survey does not create new problems. With lower homes, common in places like West Hill, there is little between a roof defect and the ceiling, so water can show inside quickly once it gets past the covering. Finding the cause first saves a second job inside.

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT.

Common roof problems in West Hill

Height and steep pitches make close inspection risky. Three-storey houses, blocks of flats and tall commercial buildings are common examples. A drone gets close-up views from a safe position on the ground.

People normally book a survey when they’ve noticed something like this:

  • Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
  • Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
  • Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters

With Royal Pavilion about 0.6 miles south-east, the area around West Hill has a long history. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • How long the report takes to arrive
  • Which limits apply to the survey
  • Whether the roof space is looked at, where there is one
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see

What a good roof survey covers

Drone roof surveys around West Hill

West Hill is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. Many older homes in Sussex have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as St Paul's CofE Primary School and Nursery, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. For an older house near a landmark such as Galeed Strict Baptist Chapel, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
