Drone roof survey in West Wittering: what you get

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. Strong wind or a downpour rules out a flight, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We survey flat roofs on upper floors, valleys and parapet gutters and tall and steep roofs, and people most frequently book us about wind damage high on the roof and cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots.

Some older homes in villages like West Wittering are listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Honest limits

We only report what can be seen safely on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:

  • Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.

What we check

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks

Drones, thermal imaging and West Wittering roofs

West Wittering is within about 1 mile of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. Many older homes in Sussex have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.

If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

West Wittering is about 6 miles north-west of Selsey, in West Sussex. We carry out drone roof surveys in West Wittering for houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings, with a written report and photographs every time. West Wittering is one of the towns and villages in West Sussex we cover. Portsmouth is in our area too.

We work across the PO20 postcode area for drone roof surveys. That includes homes and businesses on Royce Way, Elmstead Gardens and Locksash Close. Nearby, we also carry out drone roof surveys in East Wittering (2 miles south-east), Shipton Green (2 miles north-east), Somerley (2 miles east), Earnley (2 miles east) and Birdham (3 miles east). Further out, we also cover Bognor Regis (9 miles east), Chichester (6 miles north-east), Selsey (6 miles south-east), Emsworth (5 miles north), Portfield (7 miles north-east) and Yapton (13 miles east).

Surveys for landlords and agents in West Wittering

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work.

If you own several properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To arrange surveys for several addresses, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the addresses.

What we’re asked to look at in West Wittering

Not every roof can take a person’s weight. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and some sheet roofs are fragile. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Lifted or split lead flashings
  • Plant growth and moss on the roof
  • Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
  • Hidden gutters full of leaves

Anyone responsible for a site like West Wittering Parochial Church of England School will know that big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • Their insurance cover
  • Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
  • How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone

Questions from West Wittering

Are there drone restrictions around West Wittering?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.

Is West Wittering within the area you cover?

Yes, West Wittering is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

What do I do with the report?

The report arrives by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. With Standard there is a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation.

How long will you be at the property?

Expect it to take roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. The written report follows by email, on the timescale of your package.

What does the report include?

It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, backed by photographs. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too, so you know exactly what was covered.

How the survey changes by roof type

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Felt often lasts around 15 to 20 years, EPDM rubber around 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30. Photos show how the covering is wearing.

Chimney stacks

From the air, a lean or a loose pot is easy to see. We record what we find with photos.

How it works

There is not much for you to do on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, like stains, drips or loose pieces, and we will get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Somewhere like West Wittering needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen, inside and out.

  1. You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
  • Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
  • Tell us about parking before the day

Before and after the survey

Most of what helps is simple and safe from ground level. A few suggestions:

  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Shut pets inside while we fly

You get an in-person consultation with the Premium Survey to talk through the photographs and findings. It is a chance to ask about anything in the report.

Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On high roofs, leave clearing to a professional. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.
