Drone roof survey in Weston: what you get

Every flight starts with an airspace check. Near protected airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If permission is not given, we inspect by other means and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. Typical surveys look at slipped or missing slates on a high roof and loose ridge and hip tiles, across chimney stacks, valleys and parapet gutters and tall and steep roofs.

Some older homes in villages like Weston are listed or in a conservation area. A look by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, and where it can wait, that’s said too.

FAQs for Weston

Is drone flying allowed in Weston?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Will you come out to Weston?

Yes, Weston is covered. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the roof space, someone has to give us access; we’ll agree the details when you book.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs.

What happens after the survey?

The report comes by email, and what you do next is up to you: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once access has been agreed. Roofs over flats are frequently shared, so we need permission from the building owner or managing agent. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.

Drones, thermal imaging and Weston roofs

The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. With Benham Park about 4.7 miles south-east, Weston sits in an area with a long building history. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs.

Weston is about 6 miles north-west of Newbury, in West Berkshire. Whether the building in Weston is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Our area takes in places right across West Berkshire. There is also a page for Reading.

Surveys in RG20 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. We also cover East Shefford (1 mile north-west), Great Shefford (1 mile north-west), Wickham (1 mile south), Easton (2 miles south-east) and Shefford Woodlands (2 miles west). We also work in nearby towns such as Newbury (6 miles south-east), Thatcham (8 miles south-east), Speenhamland (6 miles south-east), Hungerford (5 miles south-west), Lambourn (5 miles north-west) and Shaw (6 miles south-east).

What affects the price in Weston

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • The size of the roof
  • The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 inc. VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Getting in touch

A little information up front helps. Please include:

  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • When you need the report by
  • What made you get in touch
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window

Unsure which package suits your roof? It’s easiest to call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We will explain the options and the price.

What we do, step by step

On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that is worrying you. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a small place like Weston, access is normally the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Keep pets in another room
  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Advice

Honest limits

In fairness, a roof survey has limits:

  • A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll point you to the right survey before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Fragile roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Chimney stacks

Surveys for landlords and agents in Weston

Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when booking and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, from shops and offices to industrial units. Larger roofs take longer.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Weston

Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Older slates and tiles break easily, and fragile sheet roofs are dangerous to walk on. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.

We are often asked to look at:

  • Moss and weeds taking hold up top
  • Debris building up in hidden gutters
  • Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
  • Storm damage on steep or tall roofs

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St Thomas' Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

What to check before booking

  • Are they insured for the work?
  • What experience they bring
  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price
  • How soon the report will arrive

Useful tips for Weston property owners

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:

  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Check the loft can be reached
  • Tell us the exact address when you book

File the report and photos with your home documents. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys, and they help if you sell.

Every so often, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Take photos of any changes.
