Why it is worth a survey now in Gurnard

Some breaches are too small to see. ELD picks up breaches a visual check might miss where the roof suits it. In a small place like Gurnard, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Electronic leak detection is quoted for your roof, because the method depends on the roof.

Electronic leak detection in Gurnard

Our ELD report shows where each breach was found, with photographs. Your roofer can then repair those points rather than guessing. Repair costs aren’t part of the report, so your roofer prices the work. A retest after repairs can check the work, where the roof still suits the method. You get a photo-illustrated written report. If you are worried about repairs that haven’t stopped the leak and leaks through a covered membrane, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

Some older homes in villages like Gurnard are listed or in a conservation area, which can shape what a new flat roof may look like. Check with the council before planning any change of material. Knowing the roof’s condition is the starting point. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest.

The report does not just list problems. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

The survey, step by step

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes longer on a large roof than a small one, with the construction of the roof playing a part too. Somewhere as small as Gurnard, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. First, we confirm which roof areas are included.
  2. The surface is prepared for the chosen method.
  3. We work across the roof with the test equipment.
  4. Each breach found is located and recorded.
  5. You receive the results to pass to your roofer.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Signs you need electronic leak detection in Gurnard

A breach can be left during installation. Testing before the roof is covered or handed over helps find them.

A survey can pick up problems such as:

  • Leaks that return after repairs
  • Damp inside with no sign on the roof
  • Failed seams and laps
  • Leaks through a covered membrane

Take an older house close to All Saints' Church: the joins between later flat roofs and the old walls are where problems typically start.

What a roof survey includes

Gurnard: your questions answered

Do you look at commercial flat roofs near Gurnard, like hotels?

Yes, commercial flat roofs are part of what we cover. For a bigger roof, you will get a quote based on the building, and roof access is agreed with you before the visit.

Is Gurnard within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, if the freeholder or managing agent agrees access. We look at the parts we are given access to.

How does ELD work?

ELD passes a small electrical current across the roof to locate holes in the membrane. The current only gets through where the membrane is breached, which shows us where the hole is.

How many surveys have you done?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Prices for electronic leak detection in Gurnard

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • How big the roof is
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before booking.

What to let us know when you contact us

When you call or email, these details help:

  • Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
  • The property’s address and postcode
  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date

Most bookings start with a short call: ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email, and we will ask about the building and what you need. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Tips that help

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:

  • Have roof specifications to hand
  • Use boards when working on the roof
  • Keep a note of leaks after rain
  • Find the breach before more patching

If anything in the report isn’t clear, ask us. We will explain what was found and what it means.

Act on leaks quickly. The longer water gets in, the more insulation and decking can be affected.

What electronic leak detection looks like in Gurnard

The coast is about 1 mile or less from Gurnard, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Wind can catch loose edges and trims on a flat roof, and salt air is hard on metal trims, flashings and fixings. Within a mile and a half or so of Gurnard there are several hotels, and like offices and blocks, hotels often sit under flat roofs. If you look after one, a leak through a flat roof can put a room out of use.

Osborne House lies about 2.3 miles east, so building around Gurnard goes back a long way. Older houses nearby frequently have flat roofs added much later, built to very different standards from the main roof. Hotels and guest houses near Gurnard cannot easily close rooms for a leak.

Gurnard is about 1 mile west of Cowes, in the Isle of Wight. We carry out electronic leak detection in Gurnard for houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings. Across the Isle of Wight, we cover Gurnard. You can also see our page for Portsmouth.

We also work in nearby towns like Newport (4 miles south), Ryde (7 miles east), Sandown (10 miles south-east), Shanklin (11 miles south-east), Ventnor (12 miles south-east) and Oakfield (8 miles east).
