Electronic leak detection in Tonge
There are different ELD methods. Low-voltage testing is usually done with the surface wet and high-voltage methods need the membrane dry and exposed. The right method depends on the membrane and the build-up of the roof, and we will explain our choice. We will say if your roof does not suit either method before any testing starts. We are often asked to look into breaches around outlets and penetrations and punctures from foot traffic or tools, on flat roof membranes, single-ply roofs and commercial flat roofs.
Some older homes in villages like Tonge are listed or in a conservation area, and that can affect how an extension roof or dormer is re-covered. Check with the council before planning any change of material. Knowing the roof’s condition is the starting point. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest.
We keep jargon out of it: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

How the survey works
There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we will take it from there. The survey itself takes more time on a big roof than a small one, with the construction of the roof playing a part too. Somewhere as small as Tonge, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- First, we confirm which roof areas are included.
- The surface is prepared for the chosen method.
- Testing runs across the agreed area.
- Each breach found is located and recorded.
- You receive the results to pass to your roofer.
Preparing for the visit
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand

Local flat roofs in Tonge
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Tonge, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Salt in the air is hard on metal flashings and fixings, and wind catches any loose edge on a flat roof. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.
If you own a rental within reach of Teynham station, flat roofs over rear additions and dormers in rented property are worth checking between tenancies. The streets around a church like Church of St Giles are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, the joins between later flat roofs and the old walls are where problems typically start.

Do you need electronic leak detection in Tonge?
Holes in a membrane frequently come from feet, tools or debris. Some are too small to see, but still let water through.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Leaks at pipes, outlets or fixings
- New roofs to check before paving or planting
- Leaks that return after repairs
- Leaks under green or ballasted roofs
Take a building like Sittingbourne Community College: large flat roofs, common on schools and other public buildings, need their outlets, upstands and coverings checked regularly.

Tonge questions
Does being near the coast affect roofs in Tonge?
Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there’s more wind, and more salt in the air. Ridges, verges, flashings and fixings are where it typically shows.
How do I find out if my home in Tonge is listed?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Do you work in Tonge?
Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, and that includes Tonge.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
Does ELD work under paving or planting?
It can be possible, depending on the roof. Covered roofs limit the methods we can use so we check the roof first.
What insurance do you have?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, if the freeholder or managing agent agrees access. We look at the parts we’re given access to.

What else we do in Tonge
For landlords and managing agents
For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps with budgets and planning.
Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when you book and we will plan the survey around it.
Why get it checked now?
Not every leak is in the membrane. ELD helps rule the membrane in or out so attention can go to the right place. In a place like Tonge, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before booking.
Why book with us
- Drone flown under a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- 5,000+ roofs surveyed
- PI and public liability insurance
- Independent findings on the roof’s condition
Should I look at the roof myself first?
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in.
