FAQs for Turnfurlong

How do I find out if my home in Turnfurlong is listed?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.

Will you come out to Turnfurlong?

Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Do you use low-voltage or high-voltage testing?

It depends on the membrane and the build-up. Low-voltage methods are usually carried out on a wet roof, while high-voltage testing needs a dry, exposed membrane.

Will you check the loft?

If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch.

What’s the price of ELD?

We quote for each roof individually. Send us details of the roof. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form for a quote.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Let us know about it as you book and we’ll plan the survey around it.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

Electronic leak detection in Turnfurlong: what you get

There are different ELD methods. Low-voltage testing is usually done with the surface wet, while high-voltage testing needs a dry, exposed membrane. Which one suits depends on the membrane and the layers of the roof and we explain which we will use. If neither method suits your roof, we’ll tell you at the outset. We survey commercial flat roofs, flat roof membranes and single-ply roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are stains far from any visible defect and breaches hidden under paving or planting.

In smaller places like Turnfurlong, flat roofs are mostly on extensions, garages, porches and dormers. They’re small, but a leak over a kitchen extension can do a lot of harm. Knowing the covering and how it was laid tells you what to expect from it, from felt and asphalt to EPDM rubber and GRP. Ponding, splits and lifting edges are the signs to look for from a window.

If any part of the flat roof membrane couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Roof by roof

Single-ply membranes

Single-ply membranes are common on commercial and newer roofs. Seams and penetrations are typical breach points.

Green and ballasted roofs

Some layers may need lifting for testing. We explain what’s needed when we quote.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

How it works

We look at the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit typically takes a length of time set by the membrane area and the build-up, which we set out in the quote. A visit to Turnfurlong is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed beforehand. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.

  1. We agree the area to be tested.
  2. We get the roof ready for testing.
  3. Testing runs across the agreed area.
  4. We mark the breach locations in our records.
  5. You receive the results to pass to your roofer.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Check pets are kept safely away

Advice

What electronic leak detection looks like in Turnfurlong

If your home is older, it is worth knowing whether it is listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Buckinghamshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Alongside them, flat-roofed extensions, dormers, garages and commercial units are common almost everywhere.

Landlords with a home close to Aylesbury station may find that flat roofs on let property tend to be checked only when they fail, which is the costly way round. Take an older house close to Holy Trinity: later flat-roofed additions are common on older houses, and their edges and upstands often show the first signs of wear. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Turnfurlong Junior School, large flat roofs, common on schools and other public buildings, need their outlets, upstands and coverings checked regularly.

Turnfurlong is about 1 mile south-east of Aylesbury, in Buckinghamshire. Whether the building in Turnfurlong is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed. Turnfurlong is one of the places in Buckinghamshire we cover. You can also see our page for Milton Keynes.

What affects the cost of electronic leak detection

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • Height and safe access
  • Whether it is a home or a commercial building
  • How big the roof is
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed

For a price for your roof in Turnfurlong, call 07833 053749 or email us with the address and some details. We’ll confirm the figure before booking.

Helping us price your survey

We will normally ask about:

  • Dates you are working to, such as exchange
  • The property’s address and postcode
  • Access details, like a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block

If you are buying, it helps to book soon after your offer is accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. Otherwise, simply call 07833 053749 or drop us an email whenever suits you.

Why get it checked now?

ELD before paving, ballast or planting goes on is simpler. Once layers are added, finding a breach is harder. Blocked gutters on homes around Turnfurlong overflow and soak walls, particularly where trees overhang. It’s easy to sort the cause early and slow to dry a damp wall.

Every price we give includes VAT. We quote electronic leak detection for each roof, as the method and time depend on the roof. We confirm the price for the job before booking.
