  • What’s hidden inside a downpipe
  • The inside of buried drains

Gutter survey in Ashlett: what you get

Damp patches on inside walls, stains below a valley or water running down the brickwork often trace back to the gutters. Our gutter survey helps show whether the rainwater system is the cause, from what can be seen safely. Where the cause looks more like the roof covering or a flashing, the report says so, with a suggested next step. If you’re worried about rotten fascias or stained soffits and gutters full of debris and silt, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.

Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, with a note and a photo for each point. You will see the good as well as the bad.

What a survey costs

To price your survey, we check:

  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • The size of the roof
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 inc. VAT. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Booking your survey

A little information up front helps. Please include:

  • Access details, like a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • What made you get in touch
  • Dates you’re working to, such as exchange
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them

Booking is simple: just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and give us a few details about the property and we’ll explain which survey suits. The price is agreed up front.

Gutter surveys in Ashlett: local notes

The coast is about 1 mile or less from Ashlett, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Whatever the covering, it’s often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.

If you look after a building such as Fawley Infant School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. Take an older house close to Church of All Saints: its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.

Common questions in Ashlett

Is my home in Ashlett listed or in a conservation area?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Does being near the coast affect roofs in Ashlett?

Often, yes. Within about 1 mile of the sea, as Ashlett is, metal fixings wear faster and gales find any loose ridge or slate.

How do I arrange a gutter survey in Ashlett?

Simply phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.

Are you insured?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.

Will you check the loft?

If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch.

How many surveys have you done?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years, with 98% customer satisfaction.

Will you walk on the roof?

Not unless it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.

Tips that help

Most of what helps is simple and safe from ground level. Our suggestions:

  • Watch the gutters during heavy rain
  • Don’t leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
  • Check from ground level or a window, not a ladder
  • Make sure downpipe clips are holding

If anything in the report isn’t clear, ask us. With the Standard Survey there is a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation.

Get trees and climbers near the eaves trimmed back by someone who can do it safely. Less debris means fewer blocked outlets.

How the survey works

After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a written report with photos, emailed to you. On timing, it usually takes about one to two hours at a typical home, and more on a big or complicated roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Ashlett frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely.

  1. First, we agree the areas to focus on.
  2. Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
  3. Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
  4. We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
  5. Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.

How to prepare

  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

When to book a survey in Ashlett

Some gutters may be too small, or have too few downpipes, for the roof they serve. An extension or extra roof slope can add water to an existing gutter and the weakness shows in a heavy downpour.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Water spilling over the gutter edge
  • Hoppers and outlets full of debris
  • Joints that drip after rain
  • Gutters packed with leaves or moss

Landlords with a home close to Hamble station may find that a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.

What to check before booking

  • What experience they bring
  • Whether the price includes VAT
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
  • Their drone registration, if they fly one

What to expect from a roof survey

Roof by roof

Box and secret gutters

A box gutter is built into the roof, often behind a parapet and when it overflows, water can get indoors. We check them where they can safely be seen.

Fascias and soffits

On buildings from before 2000, soffits may be asbestos cement. Any we think could be are flagged for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check.
