Gutter survey in Hillhead, Hampshire
A survey of gutters, valleys, outlets and downpipes around Hillhead, with a written report you can act on. Book a weekday or weekend visit.
- Choked outlets or hopper heads
- Gutters that have fallen out of line
- Soffits marked by water
DIY checks: what’s safe
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey.
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.
How a gutter survey works in Hillhead
We survey gutters and rainwater systems in Hillhead and right across London and the South East. We inspect everything we can see safely, from ground level, from windows and from the roof space. Time on site typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. The written report follows, with photos and recommendations. We survey outlets and hoppers, fascias and soffits and parapet and box gutters, and the problems we are asked to look at most are soffits marked by water and leaking or loose downpipes.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are frequently the first to give way.
What you get is a clear record of the gutter on the day we saw it. It is useful right away, and a good reference for later.

How it works
The visit usually starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. In total, it takes an hour or two at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Cottages and farmhouses around Hillhead often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
Before the survey
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Common questions in Hillhead
Do roofs near the sea, like those around Hillhead, take more of a battering?
Near the coast, roofs face more wind and more salt than further inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, while strong wind lifts anything already loose.
How do I find out if my home in Hillhead is listed?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Do you work in Hillhead?
Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, and that includes Hillhead.
How do I arrange a gutter survey in Hillhead?
It is easiest to ring 07833 053749 or email us. Give us the address and a few details about the roof, and we will suggest the right survey. We survey seven days a week.
What do I do with the report?
The report arrives by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
Does the season matter for a gutter survey?
There is no wrong time. If you’ve already seen a gutter overflowing, it is best not to wait, because the walls take the water.
Landlords, agents and block managers in Hillhead
An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord, and the report can go to both. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
We survey roofs for landlords and agents as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the gutter, with photographs, useful for planning maintenance.
What happens if roof problems are left?
A dripping joint or sagging bracket won’t get better on its own. Every downpour adds to the damage on the walls, the fascias and sometimes the rooms inside. A survey now tells you what needs doing and how urgent it is. Older cottages and farmhouses around Hillhead can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, inc. VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

How the survey changes by roof type
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Metal gutters can suffer at joints and where different metals meet. We record any corrosion or leaks we see.
Cast iron gutters
Rust at joints and brackets is the usual weak point on cast iron. Cracks, rust and leaks are recorded where they can be seen.

Gutter surveys around Hillhead
Hillhead lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Near the sea, metal fixings wear faster and loose pieces on a roof are more likely to lift. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.
If you let a flat or house near Hamble station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak. Historic houses like Osborne House, about 4.7 miles south-east, show how far back building around Hillhead goes. If yours is one of the older homes, the roof may have been repaired many times, and the survey records how each part is holding up.

When to book a survey in Hillhead
Leaves are behind most blocked gutters. Nearby trees drop leaves, twigs and seeds into gutters every autumn and the debris builds up at the outlets. A choked outlet soon means a full, overflowing gutter.
Problems we come across often include:
- Leaks at the gutter joints
- Fascia boards damaged by overflowing water
- Gutters full of debris and silt
- Sagging gutters and loose brackets
Take an older house close to St George: its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.
