What we do, step by step

Photos are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Older roofs in small places like Baker Street can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
  2. We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
  3. We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
  4. We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
  5. You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Check we can get to the back of the property

Advice

Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Baker Street

Your gutters take the rain from the roof and lead it away from the walls. When they block, leak or lose their fall, the water goes where it shouldn’t, frequently down the brickwork or into the building. Our survey looks at the whole rainwater system above ground, including gutters, valleys, outlets, hoppers and downpipes. You get a written report with photographs. If you’ve noticed gutters that have fallen out of line and choked outlets or hopper heads, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

In a village or hamlet like Baker Street, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are frequently old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. On older roofs, it’s normally the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.

Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, each with a short note and a photo. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

Baker Street questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Baker Street?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Is Baker Street within the area you cover?

Yes, Baker Street is covered. We work right across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach.

What happens next?

We email you the written report with photographs and recommendations. It is yours to share with a seller, insurer, roofer or managing agent, whichever applies.

Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?

There is no wrong time. If you’ve already seen a gutter overflowing, it’s best not to wait as overflowing water can damage walls.

Will the survey check for asbestos?

No. We don’t carry out asbestos testing. If rainwater goods or soffits look like they could contain asbestos, we note it so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check before any work.

What will the report tell me?

A written report with photographs, explaining the condition of the gutter, any defects and our recommendations, in order of urgency where relevant. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

When to book a survey in Baker Street

Moss grows on many tiled and slate roofs, and rain washes it down into the gutters. With grit from the coverings, it forms a thick sludge that holds water in the gutter and lets weeds take root.

Here are some of the things we see frequently:

  • Joints that drip after rain
  • Fascia boards damaged by overflowing water
  • Overflowing eaves gutters
  • Gutters full of debris and silt

Take an older house close to St Giles & All Saints Church: its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
  • How long the report takes to arrive

What to expect from a roof survey

Prices for gutter surveys in Baker Street

Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:

  • The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, from £400 including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Getting in touch

You do not need to know any roofing terms. Just tell us:

  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • What’s prompted the survey

We survey roofs on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To arrange a day that suits you, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and the days you’d prefer.

Roof by roof

Box and secret gutters

A secret gutter is tucked under the slates or tiles at an abutment or valley and is easy to overlook. We look at what’s visible and note what is not.

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

Older plastic gutters can turn brittle and crack. We check the joints, brackets and falls.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Climbing a ladder to look in the gutters yourself is risky. From ground level you can spot drips and overflows, but valleys, parapets and box gutters are hard to see. Our survey covers whatever is safely visible and records it with photos. For an older or listed building in a place like Baker Street, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so leaving a defect until it is urgent leaves less time to plan.

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.

What a gutter survey looks like in Baker Street

The coast is about 4 miles or less from Baker Street, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof, while driving rain finds any gap. What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, ideally before any re-roofing is planned.

If you own a rental within reach of Grays station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. If you run a business near Ealing Broadway Centre, a roof report helps plan work around trading rather than after a leak.

Baker Street is about 2 miles north-east of Grays, in Thurrock. Surveys in Baker Street work the same way as everywhere we cover: a careful look at what can safely be seen, photos and a clear written report.
