Balstonia Gutter Survey
Know where you stand with the gutter before you spend money on it. Gutter surveys in Balstonia, with photos and a clear written report.
- Joints that drip after rain
- Blocked outlets and hoppers
- Gutters full of debris and silt
How the survey works
The visit has one job: to look at the gutter as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. For a survey in Balstonia, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. Let us know about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.
- We agree which parts of the building you are most worried about.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
Getting ready for the survey
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Balstonia
Damp on walls, water marks under a valley or streaks down the brickwork often trace back to the gutters. Our gutter survey helps show whether the rainwater system is the cause, from whatever is safely visible. Where the cause looks more like the roof covering or a flashing, the report says so, with a suggested next step. If you’ve noticed overflowing eaves gutters and fascia boards damaged by overflowing water, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on downpipes, valley gutters and fascias and soffits alike.
Around Balstonia, older cottages sit alongside bungalows and newer houses. Older roofs can have slate, clay tiles or other traditional coverings, while many later ones have concrete tiles. Chimneys, valleys and gutters on older homes frequently need the most attention. The fixings under an older roof often fail before good slates or tiles do.
Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

- What’s behind fascias and inside walls

Questions from Balstonia
I let a flat near Stanford-Le-Hope station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, that is a common request. Let us know whether a tenant or an agent will let us in, and we can send the report to you or your agent.
Do roofs near the sea, like those around Balstonia, take more of a battering?
Generally, yes: wind and salt air take more of a toll near the sea. Ridges, verges, flashings and fixings are where it typically shows.
How long does a gutter survey take?
Most visits to a house take about 1–2 hours, and longer for larger or complex roofs.
Is Balstonia in your area?
Yes. We cover Balstonia and the rest of Thurrock, as part of our work across London and the South East. To book, call 07833 053749 or email us.
How many surveys have you done?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where it is applicable. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible.
Different roofs, different checks
Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters
We look at the lining, the joints and the outlets as far as they can safely be seen. Lead is also a target for theft.
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Many homes have plastic gutters and downpipes. As the seals age, joints can start to drip and brackets may drop under the weight of debris.
Balstonia homes and their roofs
Balstonia lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand.
Take a building like St Joseph's Catholic Primary School: a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. If you let a flat or house near Stanford-Le-Hope station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. Shop and office owners around Eastgate Shopping Centre may find that a written record of the roof’s condition helps you plan maintenance rather than react to leaks.

- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed

Booking your survey
These details help when you contact us:
- When you need the report by
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
Unsure which package suits your roof? It is easiest to phone 07833 053749 or email us and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We’ll talk you through the options and what they cost.
Can I check my roof myself?
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we check the roof.
Tips that help
You don’t need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:
- Look for downpipes coming loose
- Keep climbers away from the eaves
- Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
- Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
Once work is carried out, keep an eye on the gutters in the next downpour. Rain should flow to the outlets and down the downpipes. If it doesn’t, tell whoever did the work.
Get the gutters cleared every year, and more frequently if trees overhang the roof. The best time is usually after the leaves have dropped. Clean gutters can do their job.
