FAQs for Southfields
Is the coastal weather around Southfields hard on roofs?
Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there’s more wind, and more salt in the air. Ridges, verges, flashings and fixings are where it typically shows, and Southfields is within about 3 miles of the coast.
Do you cover smaller places like Southfields?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
Do you test soffits or gutters for asbestos?
No, that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor. We point out materials on older buildings that could contain asbestos so it can be checked before work starts.
What does a gutter survey cost?
Prices start from £150, including VAT. The price depends on the size of the building and how easy the gutters are to see. To get a price, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.
How soon will I get the report?
Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. Mention any deadline as you book.
How a gutter survey works in Southfields
Gutters have to slope gently towards the outlet to drain properly. Sagging brackets and slipped joints leave water standing and overflowing where the gutter dips. We check the line of each run as far as we can see it and look at the brackets and downpipe clips. Recommendations are written down and prioritised by urgency where relevant. Typical surveys look at leaks at the gutter joints and fascia boards damaged by overflowing water, across outlets and hoppers, valley gutters and downpipes.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.
You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

How we price gutter surveys
When we price a survey, we consider:
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- Which survey package you book
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.
Helping us price your survey
These details help when you get in touch:
- What’s prompted the survey
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
- The address and postcode of the property
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
Most bookings start with a short call: call 07833 053749 or drop us an email, and we will ask about the building and what you need. The price is agreed before a date is set.
Why act early in Southfields
A gutter clear-out takes the leaves away, but it does not tell you why a gutter overflows. We also check the falls, joints, brackets, outlets and downpipes, so you know whether there’s more to it. In a place like Southfields, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you’d like to know.
Why us?
- Surveys on weekdays and at weekends
- An independent view of the roof
- 5,000+ roofs surveyed

DIY checks: what’s safe
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.
Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when booking, as it helps us focus the survey.
Roof by roof
Fascias and soffits
On buildings from before 2000, soffits may be asbestos cement. We flag any that could be so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check them before they’re disturbed.
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Joints that have pulled apart are a common fault on plastic gutters. The report notes every one we spot.
What we do, step by step
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit normally takes between one and two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Cottages and farmhouses around Southfields often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- First, you tell us what you’ve seen, like overflows or damp.
- Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
- We check hidden gutters, such as valleys and parapets, where it is safe to see them.
- The roof space is checked for water marks if it’s safe to get into.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear

What a gutter survey looks like in Southfields
Southfields lies within about 3 miles of the sea, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof, while driving rain finds any gap. In Essex, older buildings are frequently clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, and lots of post-war and modern estates besides. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
If you live near a park such as Grove House Wood, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. If you let a flat or house near Stanford-Le-Hope station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak. If you run a business near Ealing Broadway Centre, a roof report helps plan work around trading rather than after a leak.
Southfields is about 2 miles south-west of Stanford-le-Hope, in Thurrock. Whether the building in Southfields is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, we can survey the roof.
