How a gutter survey works in Boxgrove
Your gutters take the rain from the roof and lead it away from the walls. When they block, leak or lose their fall, the water goes where it shouldn’t, often down the brickwork or into the building. Our survey looks at the whole rainwater system above ground, including gutters, valleys, outlets, hoppers and downpipes. The findings go into a written report with photos. We survey parapet and box gutters, outlets and hoppers and fascias and soffits, and the problems we are asked to look at most are blocked outlets and hoppers and cracked or loose downpipes.
Some older homes in villages like Boxgrove are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials like clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.
The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

How the survey works
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes about one to two hours at a typical home, and more on a big or complicated roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Boxgrove often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, like damp or overflowing gutters.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are looked at from ground level and windows.
- Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can be seen safely.
- Where it’s safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.

What to let us know when you get in touch
There is no need for technical words. It is enough to let us know:
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- Access details, like a loft hatch or a shared roof
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
Not sure which survey you need? It’s easiest to phone 07833 053749 or email us and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We will explain the options and the price.
Boxgrove homes and their roofs
Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. The wider area around Boxgrove has a long history of building, with Goodwood House about 1.5 miles north-west. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
If you look after a building such as Boxgrove CofE Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. If you let a flat or house near Chichester station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. The streets around a church like The Priory Church of St Mary and St Blaize are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.
Boxgrove is about 3 miles north-east of Chichester, in West Sussex. Houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings in Boxgrove can all book gutter surveys, with a written report and photographs every time. Across West Sussex, we cover Boxgrove. Portsmouth is in our area too.

What this survey can’t tell you
Before you book, it’s worth knowing what a survey will not do:
- Confirming asbestos in older rainwater goods
- Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
- Hidden sections we cannot view safely
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.

Useful tips for Boxgrove property owners
There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:
- Include valley, parapet and box gutters when clearing
- Check that downpipes are firmly fixed to the wall
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
- Have overhanging branches cut back
Landlords and managing agents can keep the report with the building’s records to help plan maintenance. The photographs help when you explain the work to others.
Watch your gutters from the ground or a window during heavy rain. Overflows and dripping joints are a sign to act before the walls suffer.
Landlords, agents and block managers in Boxgrove
Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with the freeholder or managing agent. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.
Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf. Access is agreed with the tenant ahead of time.
Common questions in Boxgrove
Do you cover smaller places like Boxgrove?
Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
I let a flat near Chichester station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, that is a common request. We just need to know who will give access, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.
What does the report include?
You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos, and ends with what we recommend. The most urgent items are made clear.
Is a Saturday or Sunday visit possible?
Yes. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form to arrange a day.
When does the report arrive?
That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.
Is a CCTV drain survey included?
No, CCTV drain work is not part of this survey. We check gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and note any sign that the drains need checking.
Do you use drones?
Where it helps and it is safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.
What you can safely check yourself
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
