The survey, step by step
A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. It usually takes an hour or two at most homes; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Somewhere as small as Boxgrove, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- You pick the package that suits your roof.
- On the day, we start by hearing what you’ve noticed.
- We inspect and photograph every part of the roof we can safely see.
- Moisture detection, a structural check, thermal imaging or a drone are added where your package includes them.
- The report is emailed with findings and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of

Roof surveys for homes and businesses in Boxgrove
People book a roof survey for all sorts of reasons. Some have spotted a stain or a slipped slate, while others just want to know where they stand. The approach is the same in each case: we inspect carefully and explain what we see in writing. We survey on weekdays and at weekends, so finding a time is rarely difficult. If you’ve noticed ponding, splits or blisters on flat roofs and valley linings that have cracked or split, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Some older homes in villages like Boxgrove are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, like when you want to compare after future work.

Boxgrove homes and their roofs
With Goodwood House about 1.5 miles north-west, Boxgrove sits in an area with a long building history. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof. Goodwood Aerodrome is about 3 miles from Boxgrove. Where the drone is part of the survey, the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions first.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Boxgrove CofE Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. If you own a rental within reach of Chichester station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.

Your questions about roof surveys in Boxgrove
Will you come out to Boxgrove?
Yes. Boxgrove is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
I let a flat near Chichester station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know about the building, including who will give access on the day.
Does a roof survey replace a structural engineer?
No. Our survey looks at the condition of the roof, and the Standard and Premium packages include a structural check. It is not a structural engineer’s report and does not include calculations.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. Where materials might contain it, we say so in the report and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
How quickly will I get the report?
It depends on the package: within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. We send it by email.
Does the weather affect the survey?
It depends on the weather and the survey. In strong wind or a downpour, a drone can’t fly and access may not be safe, so we’d move the date with you.
What do you check on a roof survey?
We check the coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters, plus the roof space where there is safe access. You get a written report with photos and recommendations.
What we’re asked to look at in Boxgrove
Blocked gutters cause a surprising amount of damage. Leaves, moss and silt build up, the gutter overflows and water soaks the walls. Valley and parapet gutters can overflow inside the building.
It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Cracked or blistered flat roof coverings
- Slates or tiles that have slipped or broken
- Flashings that have come away from the wall
- Loose ridge or hip tiles
Take an older house close to The Priory Church of St Mary and St Blaize: its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.
What to check before booking
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- Is VAT included in the price?
- How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
What this survey cannot tell you
A survey is a close look at the roof, but it can’t do everything. Its limits include:
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
- Defects hidden under coverings or inside walls without opening up
- The condition of the rest of the building (that is a RICS home survey)
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll suggest the right survey. What a survey covers and does not.

Checking the roof from the ground
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
Why act early in Boxgrove
Planned work is less stressful than an emergency. With a report, you can tackle the urgent jobs first and plan the rest, rather than waiting for something to fail. Matching old materials, like handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, including VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you want to find out.
