How a gutter survey works in Camber
We carry out gutter surveys in Camber as part of our cover across London and South East England. We inspect everything we can see safely, from ground level, from windows and from the loft space. A visit normally takes about 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. The written report follows, with photographs and recommendations. If you are worried about choked outlets or hopper heads and gutters that have fallen out of line, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on parapet and box gutters, fascias and soffits and downpipes alike.
In a small place like Camber, many roofs stand in the open, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photographs show what each point refers to.

Tips from our surveys
There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:
- Do not climb a ladder to look in the gutters
- Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
- Do not leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
- Look for downpipes coming loose
Questions about the report are welcome. With the Standard Survey there is a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation.
Watch your gutters from the ground or a window during heavy rain. Overflows and dripping joints are a sign to act before the walls suffer.
Questions from Camber
Is my home in Camber listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
I let a flat near Rye station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, landlords and letting agents book with us as well as owners. Just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know about the building, including who will give access on the day.
How experienced are you?
We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years.
Can you tell me if my old gutters contain asbestos?
No. We do not test for asbestos. Where gutters, downpipes or soffits could be asbestos cement, we flag them and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Are hidden gutters like valleys and box gutters included?
Yes. Hidden gutters are a common cause of leaks inside so we pay close attention to them. Parts of them may not be visible, and we’ll note that in the report.
What’s the best way to book?
The quickest way is to ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. Let us know the address and a little about the roof, and we’ll recommend the right survey. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Does the report include photos?
Yes. The report includes photographs of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.

We survey roofs for landlords and letting agents as well as homeowners. A photo-illustrated written report gives you a clear record of the gutter, which helps you plan work between tenancies.
Why it is worth a survey now in Camber
Our report is a dated record of what we found, which helps when you plan work or brief a contractor. Without it, you are relying on what can be seen from the pavement. For older village homes like those around Camber, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £150, including VAT.

Different roofs, different checks
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Metal gutters can suffer at joints and where different metals meet. Any leaks or corrosion we spot go in the report.
Box and secret gutters
A box gutter is built into the roof, often behind a parapet, so overflows can end up inside. We inspect them as far as it’s safe to see them.

Local roofs in Camber
Camber lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Near the sea, metal fixings wear faster and loose pieces on a roof are more likely to lift. Historic houses such as Lamb House, about 2.8 miles west, show how far back building in the area around Camber goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
For an older house near a landmark such as St Thomas the Apostle, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. If you let a flat or house near Rye station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.
