- Asbestos testing of old gutters, downpipes or soffits
- What’s behind fascias and inside walls

Gutter survey in Chalk End
This survey covers rainwater above ground, from the gutters down to where the downpipes meet the ground. It is not a CCTV drain survey, so we can’t see inside underground pipes. Where water seems to be backing up from below ground, the report will say so, so you can get the drains checked separately. Problems above ground, from split hoppers to leaking downpipes, are photographed and noted. Common reasons to book are gutters overflowing in heavy rain and water backing up from a hidden gutter, on parapet and box gutters, eaves gutters and fascias and soffits.
In a small place like Chalk End, many roofs stand in the open, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.
It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

Can I check my roof myself?
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Before and after the survey
Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:
- Look for downpipes coming loose
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
- Keep climbers away from the eaves
- Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
Questions about the report are welcome. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation.
Get the gutters cleared every year, and more often if trees overhang the roof. The best time is normally after the leaves have dropped. Clear gutters can carry water away as they should.
Common roof problems in Chalk End
Hidden gutters are frequently lined with lead or another sheet covering. When a lining splits or an outlet blocks, the water can come inside, because there is no outer edge for it to spill over. Lead linings can also be stolen.
It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Hoppers and outlets full of debris
- Water backing up from a hidden gutter
- Gutters overflowing in heavy rain
- Gutters full of debris and silt
Around Chalk End, as everywhere, small roof faults are simplest to sort before they let water in.
Before you book anyone
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
- How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
What we do, step by step
Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and if part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. The survey usually takes an hour or two at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Cottages and farmhouses around Chalk End often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely.
- We agree which parts of the building you are most worried about.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
Before we arrive
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Find any records of previous roof work
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Chalk End
Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, while many towns grew with post-war and newer estates. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list.
If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Church of St Andrew, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

FAQs for Chalk End
Will you come out to Chalk End?
Yes, Chalk End is covered. We work right across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
How do I find out if my home in Chalk End is listed?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
What does the report include?
It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos. Points are put with the most urgent first where relevant.
How much time does the visit need?
It normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. We will give you an idea when you book.
Can the survey be at a weekend?
Yes. Surveys are carried out seven days a week. Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email to arrange a day.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first, with the building owner or managing agent. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the survey around it.
Do you check valley and parapet gutters?
Yes, where it is safe to see them. We look from vantage points, the roof space and the roof itself where safe, and by drone where it is applicable.
What we look for on each type of roof
Fascias and soffits
Soffits and timber fascias suffer when gutters overflow. We check them along with the gutters.
Cast iron gutters
A cracked cast iron downpipe can leak down the wall unseen, so we look closely at the walls around them.
