- Dripping or leaking gutter joints
About our gutter survey in Crowhurst
Gutters have to slope gently towards the outlet to drain properly. Sagging brackets and slipped joints leave water standing and overflowing where the gutter dips. We check the line of each run as far as we can see it and look at the brackets and downpipe clips. You get written recommendations, prioritised by urgency where relevant. Typical surveys look at valley or box gutters that overflow inside and leaves and moss blocking gutters, across valley gutters, eaves gutters and outlets and hoppers.
Some older homes in villages like Crowhurst are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.
The report does not just list problems. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

Signs you need a gutter survey in Crowhurst
Valley, parapet and box gutters are often lined with lead or a sheet material. Splits and blocked outlets in these gutters can send water straight into the building as there’s nowhere harmless for it to go. Lead linings can also be stolen.
A survey can pick up problems like:
- Soffits marked by water
- Overflowing eaves gutters
- Cracked or loose downpipes
- Gutters full of debris and silt
If you own a rental within reach of Crowhurst station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- Whether VAT is in the quoted price
- Will the report include photos?
The survey, step by step
Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a report with photos, sent to you by email. As for time on site, it normally takes between one and two hours for most houses, and longer for a large or complex roof. In a small place like Crowhurst, access is usually the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We start by hearing about any drips, overflows or damp patches.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from the ground and vantage points.
- Any valley, parapet or box gutters are looked at as far as safe access allows.
- Where the loft can be reached safely, we check it for staining or damp.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Advice
How the survey changes by roof type
Cast iron gutters
Cast iron tends to fail at the joints and fixings. We note corrosion, cracks and leaking joints as far as we can see them.
Aluminium and other metal gutters
On big buildings, one blocked outlet can affect a long run so outlets get close attention.
Your questions about gutter surveys in Crowhurst
Is my home in Crowhurst listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Is the coastal weather around Crowhurst hard on roofs?
Near the coast, roofs face more wind and more salt than further inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.
Does the report include photos?
Yes. Photographs are part of every report, so you can see each point for yourself.
What insurance do you have?
We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
Does the season matter for a gutter survey?
Any time of year works. Booking before autumn and winter gives you time to plan, and a wet spell can show where gutters overflow.
Do you use drones?
Yes, where it’s applicable. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only when it’s safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies.
Leave it or get it looked at?
A dripping joint or sagging bracket won’t get better on its own. Every downpour adds to the damage on the walls, the fascias and sometimes the rooms inside. Getting it surveyed now shows what needs attention first. For an older or listed building in a place like Crowhurst, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.
There are three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Honest limits
No survey can tell you everything, and it’s better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:
- Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey
- Hidden sections we cannot view safely
- Rot or damp concealed behind fascias or inside walls
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will point you to the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.

Checking the roof from the ground
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
What a gutter survey looks like in Crowhurst
Crowhurst is within about 4 miles of the coast, so there’s more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Near the sea, metal fixings wear faster and loose pieces on a roof are more likely to lift, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. In Sussex, older roofs are frequently handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs, and oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of East Sussex’s older buildings. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.
Take a building like Crowhurst CofE Primary School: large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near The Parish Church of St George, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.
Crowhurst is about 3 miles north-west of Hastings, in East Sussex. Whether the building in Crowhurst is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, we can survey the roof on a weekday or at the weekend.
