Airspace, weather and Crowhurst roofs
Crowhurst lies within about 4 miles of the sea. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
Anyone responsible for a site like Crowhurst CofE Primary School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Durhamford Manor lies about 3.8 miles north, so building around Crowhurst goes back a long way. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. If you live in an older home near The Parish Church of St George, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

About our thermal roof survey in Crowhurst
Thermal imaging works best in the right conditions. A sunny day before the survey, a dry roof surface and little wind all help. Rain, wind and cloud can all make the patterns weaker. We’ll discuss the weather with you when booking, and the report explains how the conditions on the day affected the results. We’re often asked to look into areas of a flat roof that may hold water and moisture around outlets and upstands, across ceilings below the roof, flat roofs and insulated roof spaces.
Some older homes in villages like Crowhurst are listed or in a conservation area. A look from above or with a thermal imager does not touch the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent, whichever applies.

Tips that help
Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:
- Check outlets after heavy rain
- Let us know where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
- Don’t switch the heating off ahead of the visit
- Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
We note the weather and surface conditions, and how they may have affected the results. That way you know how much weight to give each finding.
Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.
DIY checks: what’s safe
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when booking, as it helps us focus the survey.
How the survey changes by roof type
Pitched slate and tile roofs
Thermal images of a pitched roof can still show heat loss patterns and some damp areas. We explain what can and cannot be read from them.
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Water often gets in where roofs meet walls, parapets or valley gutters. The camera can help show damp around these junctions.
Crowhurst: your questions answered
Do you cover smaller places like Crowhurst?
Yes. Crowhurst is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Is Crowhurst in the area you cover?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Crowhurst as anywhere else.
How fast do I get the report?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. All of them come by email, ready to forward.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we are not structural engineers and don’t carry out calculations. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
How experienced are you?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
Can you do a thermal survey in any weather?
Conditions on the day have a big effect on what the camera can show. Dry, calm weather after some sun gives the best chance of clear images. We record the conditions in the report, so you know how much weight to give the images.
Honest limits
Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Keep these in mind:
- The condition of timbers we cannot see
- Proving moisture from the images alone
- A structural engineer’s assessment

Leave it or get it looked at?
Before replacing a large flat roof, it is useful to know how much of it is actually wet. Images backed by moisture readings show where problems seem to be before you commit. In a small place like Crowhurst, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we can help you choose.

What we do, step by step
Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect what can be seen safely, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. Most visits take between one and two hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. Older rural homes like those around Crowhurst can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely.
- First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
- Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
- We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there is safe access.
- You get a report with thermal images, photos and our recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Leave side gates unlocked
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Let us know about parking before the day
