Gutter Survey in Fairfield
A survey of gutters, valleys, outlets and downpipes in Fairfield, carried out by an experienced roof surveyor. You get a clear written report with photographs.
- Gutters packed with leaves or moss
- Overflowing eaves gutters
- Soffits marked by water
Why get it checked now?
A written report gives you a dated record of the gutters’ condition, which helps when you plan work or brief a contractor. Without it, you’re relying on what can be seen from the pavement. Outbuildings and barns around Fairfield are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
Every price we give includes VAT. Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. You’ll know the exact price before you book.

Gutter survey in Fairfield: what you get
Most gutters hang from the fascia boards at the eaves, so we check the fascias and soffits too. Water that overflows for long enough can rot timber fascias and stain the soffits below. On buildings from before 2000, some soffits and rainwater goods may be asbestos cement. We don’t carry out asbestos testing, but we flag anything that could contain it. If you’ve noticed leaves and moss blocking gutters and fascia boards damaged by overflowing water, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Older buildings in small places like Fairfield may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.
Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

How it works
The visit has one job: to see as much of the gutter as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Notes and photographs go into the written report. It normally takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. In a hamlet or village like Fairfield, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We start by hearing about any drips, overflows or damp patches.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are looked at from the ground and vantage points.
- Any valley, parapet or box gutters are looked at as far as safe access allows.
- The roof space is checked for water marks if it’s safe to get into.
- The findings are written up with photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Check pets are kept safely away
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Check the loft hatch can be reached

Advice
What we look for on each type of roof
Fascias and soffits
Most gutters are fixed to the fascia, so a rotten fascia can let the gutter drop. Damaged or stained boards are recorded.
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Many homes have plastic gutters and downpipes. Their joints can leak as the seals wear, and brackets can sag under load.
When you need someone else
To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:
- Pipes below ground level
- Asbestos testing of old gutters, downpipes or soffits
- Hidden sections we cannot view safely
If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.

Gutter surveys around Fairfield
With Hinxworth Place about 3.7 miles north-east, Fairfield sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.
If you let a flat or house near Letchworth Garden City station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. If you look after a building such as Fairfield Park Lower School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.
Fairfield is about 1 mile south-west of Stotfold, in Hertfordshire. We carry out gutter surveys in Fairfield for houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings, with a written report and photographs every time. Fairfield is one of the towns and villages in Hertfordshire we cover. For surveys nearby, see our Milton Keynes page.
We survey roofs across the SG5 and SG6 postcode area for gutter surveys. Local streets include Darwin Lane, Connelly Lane and Bronte Avenue, all of which we cover. Further out, we also cover Stevenage (7 miles south-east), Welwyn Garden City (14 miles south), Harpenden (13 miles south), Hitchin (4 miles south), Baldock (3 miles east) and Benslow (4 miles south).
Local landmarks in Fairfield

Tips that help
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- Book gutter clearing once a year, more frequently near trees
- Check the loft with care after heavy rain
- Look out for overflows when it pours
- Check from the ground or a window, not a ladder
For let and shared buildings, the report can go on file and use it to plan upkeep. The photos help when you explain the work to others.
Get small faults like a dripping joint or loose downpipe sorted quickly. Left alone, they usually grow and spilled water harms brickwork and woodwork.
What we’re asked to look at in Fairfield
Falling leaves are the most common cause of blocked gutters. Nearby trees drop leaves, twigs and seeds into gutters every autumn, and they collect at the outlets. A choked outlet soon means a full, overflowing gutter.
These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:
- Water spilling over the gutter edge
- Downpipes that are split or coming away
- Sagging gutters and loose brackets
- Rotten fascias or stained soffits
If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St Thomas' Church, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Whether the price includes VAT
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
FAQs for Fairfield
How do I find out if my home in Fairfield is listed?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
I let a flat near Letchworth Garden City station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, landlords and agents book with us as well as owners. You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a few details.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Where it is relevant to the survey and there is safe access, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch.
When does the report arrive?
Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. If you have a deadline, such as an exchange date, tell us when booking.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where applicable and safe. We fly a sub-250g drone and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). It is included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where it applies, the Premium Survey.
