Your questions about gutter surveys in Long Green
Is Long Green within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
Can a landlord with a rental near Braintree Freeport station book a roof survey?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you need, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
How fast do I get the report?
Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline as you book.
What does a gutter survey cost?
Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. The size of the property and the access affect the price. For a price, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
How much time does the visit need?
For a house, expect about 1–2 hours on site, with commercial buildings nearer 3–4 hours.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where it is applicable. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We are a CAA-registered drone operator.
Can a gutter survey explain damp on my walls?
Leaking gutters and downpipes are a common cause of damp walls, and the survey looks for that. If the cause looks like something else, the report says so, based on what we can see.
How a gutter survey works in Long Green
Most gutters hang from the fascia boards at the eaves, so we look at the fascias and soffits too. Water that overflows for long enough can rot timber fascias and mark the soffits underneath. On buildings from before 2000, some soffits and rainwater goods may be asbestos cement. We don’t test for asbestos, so we flag anything that might contain it for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check. If you are worried about rotten fascias or stained soffits and leaks at the gutter joints, we can find out what’s behind it, on fascias and soffits, outlets and hoppers and valley gutters alike.
Older buildings in small places like Long Green may be listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are frequently matched when work is done.
The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent, whichever applies.

What we do, step by step
A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Somewhere like Long Green needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.
- We ask about overflows, damp or leaks you’ve noticed.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and vantage points.
- We check hidden gutters, such as valleys and parapets, where it is safe to see them.
- Where the loft can be reached safely, we check it for staining or damp.
- The findings are written up with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building

Advice
What you can safely check yourself
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in.
What a gutter survey looks like in Long Green
What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list. Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, alongside a good many post-war and newer estates. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
If you let a flat or house near Braintree Freeport station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near St Barnabas, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

Tips from our surveys
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:
- Keep climbers away from the eaves
- Have gutters cleared at least once a year
- Look for downpipes coming loose
- Watch ceilings under valley gutters for fresh marks
Landlords and managing agents can keep the report with the building’s records to help plan maintenance. Photos make it easier to explain the work to owners, tenants or contractors.
Watch your gutters from ground level or a window during heavy rain. Water spilling over the edge or out of a joint is a sign that something needs attention before damage builds up.
What we look for on each type of roof
Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters
A London butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter and if it blocks, water can come indoors. We check it where it is safe to see.
Fascias and soffits
Most gutters are fixed to the fascia, so rot in the boards can loosen the whole run. We note soft, stained or damaged boards we can see.
When to book a survey in Long Green
Falling leaves are the most common cause of blocked gutters. Nearby trees drop leaves, twigs and seeds into gutters every autumn, and they collect at the outlets. A choked outlet soon means a full, overflowing gutter.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- Brackets that have dropped or snapped
- Downpipes that are split or coming away
- Rotten fascias or stained soffits
- Dripping or leaking gutter joints
Trees in and around Bocking Blackwater shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.

What we can’t see
In fairness, a roof survey has limits:
- Rot or damp concealed behind fascias or inside walls
- Hidden sections we can’t view safely
- Confirming asbestos in older rainwater goods
