Roof surveys for homes and businesses in Long Green
Our roof survey gives you a clear picture of your roof’s condition. We check the coverings, the ridges and hips, the valleys and flashings, the chimneys and the gutters, and the loft space where there’s safe access. You get a photo-illustrated written report and recommendations. Where it helps, we say which items are urgent and which can wait. Typical surveys look at leaning or weathered chimney stacks and loose ridge or hip tiles, across lead flashings, clay and concrete tiles and ridges, hips and valleys.
Somewhere as small as Long Green, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

What we look for on each type of roof
Clay plain and peg tiles
Tile-hanging on walls and dormer cheeks is checked as part of the roof where it is relevant. Loose or missing tiles there let rain into the wall.
Lead flashings and valleys
Flashings and valleys are where many leaks start. That’s why we check them closely.

When you need someone else
Before booking, it is worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- How the roof will behave in every kind of weather
- Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
- Whether materials contain asbestos (that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor)
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

What we do, step by step
There is not much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will get on with the inspection. The survey itself takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. Around Long Green, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it’s useful to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it’s safe.
- We help you choose a Basic, Standard or Premium Survey.
- We arrive at the agreed time and talk through any concerns.
- We inspect and photograph every part of the roof we can safely see.
- Extra checks are carried out where your package includes them.
- You get a written report with photos and clear recommendations.
Preparing for the visit

Advice
Landlord and commercial surveys in Long Green
Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when booking and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

What you can safely check yourself
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
What affects the cost of roof surveys
What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. The main factors are:
- Roof area
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.
Getting in touch
To price your survey accurately, we’ll ask about:
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- The kind of building and roof involved
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- What’s prompted the survey

Local roofs in Long Green
In Essex, older buildings are often clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, and a good many post-war and modern estates besides. Whatever the covering, it’s often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so check with the council.
Take an older house close to St Barnabas: old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs. For landlords with property near Braintree Freeport station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant. If you live near a park such as Bocking Blackwater, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.
