How a gutter survey works in Northchurch
Damp on walls, water marks under a valley or streaks down the brickwork frequently trace back to the gutters. Our gutter survey helps show whether the rainwater system is the cause, from what can safely be seen. If the evidence points elsewhere, like a flashing or the roof covering, we will say so. The next step is suggested too. If you are worried about gutters that have fallen out of line and dripping or leaking gutter joints, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Around Northchurch, older cottages sit alongside bungalows and newer houses. Older roofs can have slate, clay tiles or other traditional coverings, while many later ones have concrete tiles. On older homes, chimney stacks, valleys and gutters are normally where the work is, and the fixings under the coverings matter too. The fixings under an older roof often fail before good slates or tiles do.
Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, with a note and a photo for each point. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

What affects the cost of gutter surveys
A few things affect what a survey costs:
- Building height and the viewpoints available
- How big the roof is
- Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we will tell you which fits.
Getting in touch
Before you get in touch, it’s useful to have:
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- The kind of building and roof involved
To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or email us and tell us the address and what’s prompted the survey. You will know the price before anything is booked.
Before and after the survey
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Check from ground level or a window, not a ladder
- Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
- Note any damp stains below the gutters
- Have overhanging branches cut back
Report times depend on the package you choose: within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. We email it to you once it’s done.
Don’t forget valley, parapet and box gutters. They block in the same way as the gutters you can see but you cannot check them from the street, so ask for them to be included when gutters are cleared.

What else we do in Northchurch
Northchurch homes and their roofs
The wider area around Northchurch has a long history of building, with Cholesbury Manor House about 3 miles west. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of Saint Mary, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as St Mary's CofE Primary School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. If you let a flat or house near Berkhamsted station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.
Northchurch is about 1 mile north-west of Berkhamsted, in Hertfordshire. We carry out gutter surveys in Northchurch for houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings, with a written report and photographs every time. Across Hertfordshire, we cover Northchurch. Milton Keynes is in our area too.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
The survey, step by step
When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you need to know. After that, we check everything we can see safely, from the ground, from windows, in the loft space and by drone where applicable. The survey usually takes about 1–2 hours for a house, and more on a big or complicated roof. In a smaller place like Northchurch, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. Low roofs on bungalows can frequently be seen well from the ground, and the loft shows the rest, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where it applies.
- We ask about overflows, damp or leaks you’ve noticed.
- We look along the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground and from windows.
- Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can be seen safely.
- The roof space is checked for water marks if it’s safe to get into.
- The findings are written up with photographs and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Let us know where we can park nearby

Northchurch questions
How do I find out if my home in Northchurch is listed?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Is Northchurch within the area you cover?
Yes, Northchurch is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
What does the report include?
It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, backed by photographs. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, so you know exactly what was covered.
Will you check the drains below ground?
No. Our gutter survey covers rainwater above ground, from the gutters to the bottom of the downpipes. If a drain below ground looks like the cause, the report says so.
Can the survey be at a weekend?
Yes. Surveys are carried out on any day of the week. Just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email to arrange a day.
