Gutter surveys in Shedfield

About our gutter survey in Shedfield

A gutter needs a steady fall towards its outlet or water sits in them. When brackets sag or joints part, water pools, drips and spills over where the gutter dips. We look along each run for sags, gaps and leaking joints, along with the brackets and downpipe fixings. Recommendations are written down and prioritised by urgency where relevant. We survey parapet and box gutters, eaves gutters and fascias and soffits, and people most often book us about overflowing valley or parapet gutters and rotten fascias or stained soffits.

In a small place like Shedfield, many roofs stand in the open, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are frequently the first to give way.

You can share the report with anyone who needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent.

Shedfield questions

Is Shedfield within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.

I let a flat near Botley station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. Just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know about the building, including who will give access on the day.

How long does a gutter survey take?

Most visits to a house take about 1–2 hours, and longer for larger or complex roofs.

Are you insured?

We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.

Will you walk on the roof?

Not unless it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.

Are hidden gutters like valleys and box gutters included?

Yes. Hidden gutters are a common cause of leaks inside so we pay close attention to them. Parts of them may not be visible, and we’ll note that in the report.

DIY checks: what’s safe

It’s useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

What a survey costs

Our packages start from £150, inc. VAT. The price for your roof depends on:

  • House, block, shop or office
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • Which survey package you book
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before booking.

Helping us price your survey

When you call or email, these details help:

  • Your timetable, like an exchange date
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Anything about access we should know

We survey roofs on weekdays and at weekends. To arrange a day that suits you, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Shedfield homes and their roofs

A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Whatever the covering, it is frequently the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask.

If you live in an older home near Church of St John, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. For site and facilities teams at buildings like St John the Baptist Church of England Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

Shedfield is about 4 miles north of Fareham, in Hampshire. Bookings from Shedfield are handled just like any other: a call or an email, a price, then a date. Shedfield is one of the towns and villages in Hampshire where we work. Our Southampton page covers surveys nearby.

Roof by roof

Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters

Lead gutters need their linings, steps and outlets in good order where it’s safe to see them. Missing lead is something we check for too.

Fascias and soffits

Overflowing water stains soffits and rots timber. They’re looked at as part of the survey.

When to book a survey in Shedfield

Sometimes a gutter struggles with the area of roof draining into it. An extension or extra roof slope can add water to an existing gutter, and a heavy downpour shows up the problem.

We’re often asked to look at:

  • Water spilling over the gutter edge
  • Valley or box gutters that overflow inside
  • Leaking or loose downpipes
  • Soffits marked by water

For landlords with property near Botley station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let.

What to check before booking

  • Their report turnaround times
  • Their track record with similar roofs
  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?

What a roof survey includes

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

We survey roofs for landlords and letting agents as well as homeowners. A photo-illustrated written report gives you a clear record of the gutter, which helps you plan work between tenancies.

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work around your tenants.

How it works

Safety comes first on every visit. Everything that can safely be seen is inspected, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. The survey usually takes about one to two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. In a hamlet or village like Shedfield, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. You let us know where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
  2. The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and windows.
  3. We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
  4. The loft space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
  5. You receive a report with photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

Booking a survey

Most bookings start with a short call: call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will ask a few questions about the roof. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.
