Gutter survey in Skye Green
A gutter needs a steady fall towards its outlet or water sits in them. When brackets sag or joints part, water pools, drips and spills over where the gutter dips. We check the line of each run as far as we can see it, along with the brackets and downpipe fixings. You get written recommendations, prioritised by urgency where relevant. We are often asked to look into leaks at the gutter joints and gutters packed with leaves or moss, on parapet and box gutters, eaves gutters and outlets and hoppers.
Older buildings in small places like Skye Green may be listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.
After the visit, you get a report with photos, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the gutter, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Skye Green
Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with the building owner or managing agent. Tell us about it when you book and we will plan the survey around it.
Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, including offices, shops and units. Bigger roofs take more time, so they’re priced to suit.
Why act early in Skye Green
A written report gives you a dated record of the gutters’ condition, useful when you’re planning maintenance or getting work priced. Without one, it’s guesswork from ground level. In a small place like Skye Green, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.

Local roofs in Skye Green
The wider area around Skye Green has a long history of building, with Layer Marney Tower about 4.5 miles south-east. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years. Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, and lots of post-war and modern estates besides. Whatever the covering, it is frequently the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.
Landlords with a home close to Kelvedon station may find that a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant. If you live in an older home near Parish Church of All Saints, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.

What we’re asked to look at in Skye Green
Most gutter joints rely on seals or sealant that wear out. Plastic sections expand and contract with the weather, and in time their joints can drip. Cast iron joints can corrode and part where the paint has failed.
Here are some of the things we see frequently:
- Gutters full of debris and silt
- Hoppers and outlets full of debris
- Dripping or leaking gutter joints
- Overflowing eaves gutters
If you look after a building such as Honywood Community Science School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.

Can I check my roof myself?
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us as you book.
What we can’t see
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Blockages deep inside downpipes
- Hidden sections we cannot view safely
- What’s behind fascias and inside walls
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will recommend the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
Roof types and parts we check
- Valley gutters
- Eaves gutters
- Parapet and box gutters
- Outlets and hoppers
- Downpipes
- Fascias and soffits
How it works
The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. In total, it takes about one to two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Rural addresses near Skye Green can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, like damp or overflowing gutters.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from ground level.
- Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can be seen safely.
- The loft space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
How to prepare
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

FAQs for Skye Green
I let a flat near Kelvedon station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, that is a common request. Let us know whether a tenant or an agent will let us in, and we can send the report to you or your agent.
Is my home in Skye Green listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
How do I book a survey in Skye Green?
Just phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address. We’ll ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so whoever owns or manages the building needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we are given access to.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, so it’s not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If it’s needed and safe to reach, yes. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging, as far as the space allows.
